June 26.

leaf, near the stem that holds
it to the tree branch, there is
a small opening.
Inside the rolled up leaf Is
a seemingly lifeless object,
which the informed observer
knows is the larva of the
promcthea moth.
All winter long the Icaf
cradle has hung there; inside
it a transformation has taken
place which will become a
living, flying thing when
spring comes, and a beautiful
moth emerges from its leaf
cradle. j
Bluish-Green
The caterpillar that sewed
the two edges of the leaf to
gether with silk from its own
body was bluish-green in color
with a couple of rows of black
spots on its body and two red
spots on either side of the
head.
Last fall the caterpillar
crawled inside the leaf cap
sule, pulled the edges to
gether, leaving an opening at
the top, and dropped off into
a deep sleep.
Spring, warm, moist air,
and the awakening. An adult
promcthea moth emerges
from the upper open end of
the leaf capsule. The wings
harden, the moth is capable of
flight. All it waits for now is
the night. On the head of the
newly born moth are two
large, feathery antennae,
which indicates this is a male
moth.
Somewhere, perhaps miles
away, another moth of the
same species emerges from
another leaf capsule. This one
is lacking the feathery anten
nae. This, the female prome
thea, has only a pair of slen
der head ornaments. She, loo,
waits for the darkness, safely
on a tree trunk.
Antenna Test Air
With his new wings, strok
ing the warm nignt air, me
male promcthea moth, one of
the commonest of the many
varieties of moths, starts out
on his journey, his sensitive
antennae testing the air. The
little female exudes a faint,
delicate fragrance; a tantali
zing odor that waft for great
distances on me summer air,
Out there, in the outer dark
ness, he detects the fragrance.
With unerring exactness he
follows the scent directly to
its source.
The waiting bride of the
night may attract to her side
a dozen or a hundred males.
Some have come from as far
away as four or five miles. All
have responded to the silent
call.
At the dawn of the next
morning, she seeks a quiet
place to deposit her eggs.
Each will hatch into a tiny
greenish biue caterpillar. But
by that time both father and
mother promethea moth will
have become lifeless clods on
the forest floor.
The nighttime rendezvous
will have been their last ap
pearance on the earthly scene.
For them the final curtain has
fallen.

solve within themselves build
individuality.
Mentor of Reality
"4. The parent should re
member that seeing a child's
point of view doesn't require
agreeing with it, even if the
child pillories him as a vile
traitor. For his young child,
the parent is the mentor of
reality, and responsible for
teaching him to live with
things as they are.
"5.. Within the limits of
practicability and the require-1
ments of education and home
training, let the child develop
his own interests and use his
own time. A fabulous modern
round of dancing lessons,
sports lessons, camps, parties
and other planned recreation
al activities leave most chil
dren limp with bewilderment
and frustration.
