Fate of Kennedy's
Farm Program Hangs
On Roll Call Vote
Washington -WPD- The fate
of the Kennedy farm program
hung on an expected close
roll call vote set for today.
Administration strategists
were predicting victory. Re
publican opponents were pri
vately pessimistic as the
House began its third and fin
al day of debate on the ad
ministration's new approach
to the farm problem.
Under the measure submit
ted to Congress by President
Kennedy, and already approv
ed by the Senate, the govern
ment would Impose for the
firct time strict production
controls on the planting of
Wheat and feed grains.
IHs designed to cut surplus
es that are now costing the
government $1 million a day
in storage fees alone. Repub
lican foes claim the bill would
brine "regimentation and
ruin" to all farmers.
GOP leaders have com
plained that Agriculture Sec
retary Orvillc L. Freeman
has managed to "buy votes"
for the measure by accepting
more than a dozen floor
amendments demanded by
Democrats as the price of
their support.

Drugs - A poll of key mem
bers of the House Commerce
committee indicated today
that an administration-supported
drug control bill ap
pears to be dead for this ses
sion. The committee is consid
ering the measure, which
would fix tough new govern
ment conirols over the pro
duction of cosmetics as well
as drugs. Under the measure
drug makers would have to
prove that their products were
effective as well as safe.
Entertainers - The Senate
rackets subcommittee was ex
pected today to continue ex
ploring charges that leaders
of the entertainers union re
ceived Illegal favors. A sub
committee spokesman would
only sny today's session would
take up a Florida case that
was similar to favors alleged
ly given to Jackie Bright, ad
ministrative secretary of the
American Guild of Variety
Artists, by a plush Catskill
Mountain resort hotel.
Sugar - Sen. Wallace F.
Bennett (R-Utah) today ques
tioned quotas that would be
parcelled out to foreign sugar
producers under a bill passed
Wednesday b.' the House. The
measure would extend the
Sugar Act five years past the
June 30 deadline. Bennett
said he found it hard to be
lieve that a very thorough
study was made in selecting
the quotas.
Bodies Found in
Airplane Wreckage
