Homers

that one of the longest homers
In baseball history coupled
with a .400 batting average
since Memorial Day "means
I'm finally gonna hit my real
stride this year.

my life but I never hit one

O'Dell, 7-5, who will face Hal
Woodeschick, 2-4. Woodeshick
has been belted out in the
second and first inning in his
only starts against the Giants
this year.

Lovetere, who weighs 290

LcMans 24-hour automobile
race, known unfortunately by
many as the festival of death,
comes up for renewal this
weekend and already many of
the expected 250,000 holi
dayers have crammed their
way into town.
Famed as the biggest event
of its kind in Europe, the
Le Mans race also has one of
the bloodiest histories in all
sport. The long grind takes a
toll in human life almost
every year, and it reached its
peak in 1955 when 83 people
were killed.
Despite the danger to dri
vers and spectators alike, this
event annually attracts the
world's leading racers and
tourists from all parts of
Europe.
For the daredevil drivers,
there is the challenge of a su-
preme test, and to the winner
there is everlasting glory. For
the thrill-seeking spectators,
there is an excuse for devil-may-care
merriment.
No Rooms Left
Officials of Le Mans, which
has a population of 135,546,
reported today that not a
sincle room was available in
a 30-mile radius around the
town. The town citizens are
anxiously awaiting the big
event, and most of them
have taken part in organizing
and catering to the race.
There will be 55 drivers
starting in the 24-hour classic,
and one of the highlights of
the race is the start itself.
The drivers must all stand
in marked places on the side
of the track opposite their
cars. At the signal the racers
run to their cars, start the
engines and drive off.
LIONS INK THREE
Detroit - IUP1I - Terry Barr,
Gary Lowe and Glen Davis,
three leading members of the
Detroit Lions, have returned
signed contracts to the Na
tional Football league club
for the 1962 season. Barr
caught 40 passes for 630 yards
last season; Lowe, as a de
fensive halfback, intercepted
five passes, and Davis, a for
mer track star, caught nine
passes after missing most of
the season.

former major league club
owner and general manager,
today charged baseball Com
missioner Ford Frick with
dealing in "double standards"
and branded owner Walter
O'Malley of the Los Angeles
Dodgers as "the real boss of
baseball."
Veeck, writing In the latest
issue of "Look" magazine,
said that O'Malley "is the real
boss of baseball" because
"somebody has to make deci
sions in the absence of any
contributions by the official
commissioner."
He said that Frick's reign
"has been disastrous for base
ball because it has covered a
time when baseball has been
in a period of transition and
has needed strong and imagi
native leadership." He added
that Frick "openly employs
double standards" in allowing
National League club owners
concessions denied their
American League counter
parts with the exception of
Yankee, co-owner Del Webb.

Veeck accused Webb of
"driving me out of baseball"
in the first of two copyrighted
articles in Look magazine.
"Along with many of my
American League colleagues,"
Veeck said, "I have always
