At the lakeside camp, fathers and sons '
enjoy a swim, sail or just good talk.

Every boy loves a vacation
at summer camp, and
that includes fathers in this
unique YMCA venture
IN MOST families the presents stop
when Father's Day ends. But in
a unique YMCA program, dads re
turn their sons' gifts all summer long.
These fathers do it by going to
camp with their six- to nine-year-old
sons. Since work and school ordinar
ily limit the activities fathers and
sons can share, this- gift of time and
companionship is especially welcome.
Dad Goes to Camp with
Known as Indian Guides, the dad
son plan thrives in Y's across the
country. This group from Charlotte,
N. C, takes trips to a camp several
times during the summer. The activ
ities there include hiking, games,
races, boating, swimming, crafts,
and Indian lore, and the feeling of
adventure is heightened by sleeping
in log cabins and cooking over open
campfires.
When the outings are over, the
boys not only have become closer to
their fathers but have a feeling of
participation in an adult world they
know only dimly. The fun works both
ways, of course : the fathers are just
as happy to have shared the joy of
being kids again.
Attending worship is a shared experience.
Junior tried to get into the bigger kids' games, but they wouldn't hear of it.

Smart; fry give their dads a tough battle.
It may be time for chow, but one son (center) won't part with his sneakers.
Often Mom does it, but now Dad tucks in the boys.
