Scientists at Oregon State
Study Seed Improvement
Strange As It Seems hoc
Corvalhs-Research is un
derway here at Oregon State
university to determine how
to increase forest product! by
improving the quantity and
quality of tree seeds.
The study is being conduct
ed by a husband-wife scien
tist team-Dr. Kim K. Ching,
forest geneticist in the Ore
gon Forest Research labora
tory, and Dr. Te May Ching,
agronomist in the Agricultur
al Experiment station.
Supplies of pollen are need
ed for "tailor-making" super
ior trees and for producing
large quantities of seeds, Dr.
Te May Ching explained.
If life in pollen can be ex-tended-under
natural condi
tions it exists only a short
time after being discharged
from the pod-a supply can be
maintained, she said. Pollen
from the supply could be
used whenever it is needed
and shipped to any place in
the world. Hybridization work
could be done for developing
fast growing trees with desir
able characteristics, she ad
ded. The frceze-drying of human
blood to hold in blood banks
gave birth to the idea of
frecze-drying pollen, Mrs.
Ching commented. The proc
ess for preservation of pollen
being studied at OSU is based
on the same method as freeze
drying blood and makes use
of a similar machine.
The first collection of pol
len for this research was
made last spring from Doug
las fir trees near Corvallis.
Dr. Ching explained that va
rious methods of drying and
freezing were tried and the
pollen grains were vacuum
sealed in glass tubes. These
are being held at varying
temperatures, ranging from
room temperature to 18 de
grees below zero.
Selected trees will be bred
with the treated pollen each
spring for four years. One
batch was used in April, 1961,
to fertilize conelettes on trees
in OSU's MacDonald Forest
and on Mary's Peak. Seeds
were collected in the fall and
planted. The seedlings are
now growing in the research
laboratory field.
The results so far Indicate
that freeze-dried pollen gives
as good seed production per
cone as the wind pollinated
cones. Also, the weight and
the germination percentage of
the seeds does not differ.
A one million dollar com
mercial seed crop is produced
annually by forests in Oregon
and Washington, Dr. Citing
remarked, and the demand in
the world-wide market great
ly exceeds the supply. For
ests yield seed crops only once
every three or four years be
cause seed production is
hampered by many known
and unknown factors, she explained.
