Thrives on Persecution
Persistent harassment by
every means devised by land
owners has been tried in a fu
tile effort to eradicate the
common flower called the
andclion that grows so pro
fusely. With so many hands
gainst it, it is remarkable the
poor thing hasn't given up
long ago.
This hardy golden member
of the composite family both
ered the landowner In the Old
World long before the first
tiny, silk-tufted seed sneaked
n over here. How many seeds
came over in the first place
made no difference; one or
two were enough.
A year later when the

Many Names
Naturally, a plant with

Senate Votes More
Access Roads Funds
Washington - 0)PI - The Sen
ate Tuesday voted to raise
from $2 million to $6 million
the amount of funds for con
demnation of private access
ro-ds. The vote was 49-40.
The additional funds were
proposed by Sen. Warren C.
Magnuson (D-WHsh.).
Sen. John Williams (R-Del.)
criticized the addition, accus
ing the Kennedy administra
tion of promising tax cuts for
election year purposes while
sponsoring spending increases
in Congress.
Magnuson charged that his
proposal was opposed by peo
ple who had large holdings.
He said it would help in get
ting access to intermingled
sections of national forests.
Sen. Wayne Morse (D-Ore.)
said during the discussion of
the measure that the lumber
Industry was as depressed as
any in the country and added,
"There Is no excuse for the
Forest Service not having
raised the percentage of al
lowable cut . . .," he said.

The homeowner, of course.
has other names for it, many
of which he uses when after
carefully mowing his lawn

root top. The time was when
the recommended treatment
was to squirt a few drops of
carbolic acid into each plant.
Since then, many other poi
sons have been developed, but
still there is no shortage of
dandelions.
Over a hundred varieties
of insects have been known
to visit the blossom of the
dandelion. They leave it, their
bodies covered with pollen,
which, on this pariah of the
lawn and garden, there is al
ways a generous supply. At
night or in rainy weather, the

float in ocean water for
weeks and still grow when
cast ashore. The plant will
grow on a mountain top or
on a seashore, in a lawn, a
pasture, or alongside a dusty
road.
Many of us could take a
lesson from the dandelion; it
survives in spite of discour
agement and persecution.
Persecution has made it
tough.
