Atomic Director
Suggests Finding
Cure for Cancer
By JOSEPH L. MYLER
Unitwl Press International
Washington - (UPD - Dr. Al
vin W. Weinberg doubts the
wisdom of making manned
flight into space the main
event of what he calls the
"Scientific Olympic Games"
with Russia.
He believes most Ameri
cans would prefer their coun.
try to be the first to find a
cure for cancer than the first
to put a man on Mars.
Weinberg is director of the
Atomic Energy Commission's
Oak Ridge National Labora
tory, Oak Ridge, Tenn. He
discussed his views on space
flight in an article on "Big
Science" published by the
University of Chicago.
He likened tax-supported
big science to the big monu
ments of the past, such as the
Pyramids of Egypt, which ha
said put a disastrous drain on
the civilizations which pro
duced them.
Divert Efforts
He asked whether It would
not be wise to "divert a
larger part of our effort to
ward scientific issues which
bear more directly on human
well-being than do such big
science spectaculars as man
ned space travel and high
energy physics."
By 1970, Weinberg said, the
United States will be spend
ing about $400 million a year
on the giant atom-smashers)
used in high-energy physics
research. And the cost of the
first American round-trio to
the moon, he noted, has been
estimated at anywhere from
$20 billion to $40 billion.
Weinberg objected to mak
ing manned flight the Olym
pic main event on grounds of
hazard, expense, and Tele-
vance." He said space ia "a
much more hostile environ
ment" from the standpoint o
radiation "than we had sus
pected even five years ago."
And "Just because a proj
ect is very big and very ex
pensive does not," he said.
mean that the protect will
be very successful."
Take 10 Years
About 10 years ago. h
said, an official study predict
ed it would take 10 years and
$1 billion to produce a nu
clear-powered aircraft. The 10
years have passed and the $1
billion has been spent, but
there is no atom-powered air
plane. Weinberg said the United
States is ahead of Russia in
high-energy physics but that
he does not feel even this is
"the battleground of choice."
He said he would orefer nci.
entific areas more closely re-
laiea to man s every day en
vironment. He said the "most
spectacular" of these is "mo
lecular biology" in which the
United States is well In the
lead.
Learned More
We have ' learned more
about the essential life processes-growth,
protein synthe
sis, and reproductlon-durlng
the past decade than during
all previous history," Wein
berg said.
In my opinion the proba
bility of synthesizing living
material from non-living be
fore the end of the century is
of the same order as the prob
ability of a successful manned
round trip to the planets.
I suspect that most Amer-
cans would prefer to belong
to the society which first gave
the world a cure for cancer
than to the society which puts
the first astronaut on Mars."
