Conducted Tours
To Greenland
Started in 1960
By RALPH VILLEHS
United Press Iniernetional
Viewed from an airliner.
gigantic Greenland is one of
the most awesome sights a
traveler can view ice stretch
ing infinitely snow-topped
peaks with wrinkled glaciers
oozing seaward and ragged
clumps of icebergs drifting
offshore.
Until two years ago about
the only way to see this sec
ond biggest island in the
world was in a plane on a
polar flight or to join the Air
Force and ask to be shipped
to the far nothern base of
Thule.
In 1960, the first heginninqs
of commercial tourism enter
ed the picture with a few
conducted tours to the south
of Greenland. They were suc
cessful enough that they were
arranged last year and sched
uled again for this summer.
'There's no Waldorf-Astoria
there," laughed Axel Dessau,
director of the Danish Na
tional Travel Office in New
York. "It is strictly for peo
ple who are out for adven
ture." Not Pampered
Dessau wasn't bfing in the
least disloyal to the lours'
sponsor (Aero-Lloyd) in Cop
enhagen. Descriptive pam
phlets of the 16-day tour by
air and small vessels empha
size it "will not satisfy pam
pered tourists expecting lux
urious rooms."
Travelers are told to bring
their own sleeping bags as
well as knife, fork and spoon,
plus clothing appropriate to
the brief summer in a latitude
from 60 to 70 degrees North.
Hotels are few and for much
of the trip accommodations
are in the homes of hospitable
Greenlanders who might have
different ideas about summer
heating than visitors.
Tourists frequently take to
boats to reach the little towns
and points of interest along
the fjord-punctuated shore.
The scenery is billed as the
biggest attraction but there's
the chance to meet close-up
the emerging and friendly
Greenlanders, who are among
the least known people in the
world and to see the founda
tions of a history dating back
1.000 years when the Vikings
settled there.
One of the points of all in
the Kagassiarssuq area is (he
ruins of the home of Eric the
Red, dating back to the 10th
Century, and of the first
church built in Greenland.
Visit Ice Cap
A visit to the never-melting
ice cape is included.
But Greenland is not all ice
and snow. During the short
summer the snow gives way
to cultivated fields, pastures
and even flowers around the
tiny coastal hamlets.
Although the chief tours are
to the south, it may be pos
sible again this year to go
farther north (to about 70
degrees) to the Disko Bay
area, visiting villages, seeing
the fjords close-up and for
added fishing.
Dessau claims "more fish
there than in any part of the
world" for Greenland.
For the .mindful American,
there might be one seeming
drawback. You can't get there
from here. But you can get
to Greenland via Denmark,
flying in DC6's from Copen
hagen to Narssarssuaq, the
one-time U.S. Air Force base
known as BW-1, in nine hours.
All-inclusive prices from
Copenhagen, including meals,
lodging, transportation and
necessary incidentals start
about $300 and range to about
S735, according to Dessau.
Families Discover
Boating Is Fun
"Port" and "starboard" are
well on their way to becom
ing as common household
terms as peanut butter and
jelly. As more and more fam
ilies discover the fun of boal
ing, even tiny tots are as
much at home on the water as
in the family car.
Once thoueht of as a rich
man's pasli boating fun is
now open to all families, re
gardless of income. According
to the National Association of
Engine and Boat Manufactur
ers, a national boating infor
mation group, more than 3.V
000,000 people took part in
some form of rprrpaiinnai
: boating last year. From all
indications, even greater num
bers will go aboard in 19fi2.
To meet the increased de
mand for boating facilities -:
federal, state and local gov
ernmental units arc coopent
ing to develop new facilities.
Mooring areas are bring en
larged, launching ramps are
being constructed and picnic
and camp areas along rivers
and on lakes are being im
proved to give boating fam
ilies maximum use of price
less natural resources
