Missing Stepmother Of Mass Slayer Is Found in Grave

Newsmen's curiosity and a i
relative's concern about the I
missing stepmother of a mass blow with
slayer led Tuesday to the find
ing of her body in a shallow
Brave beside her home.
I Authorities said the skull of
red-haired Mrs. Juanita Smith
was crushed by a powerful
blunt instrument
before the body was placed in
the lime-sprinkled grave. She
was positively identified

Mrs. Smith was the step
mother of Gayne Gilbert
Smith, who has admitted the
May 26-27 fatal shootings of
his uncle and aunt. Mr. and
Mrs. Andrew McBcth, and
three of their four children.
The lone survivor of the Mc
Beth family. Patsy, 13. suffer
ed a Fhoulder wound in the
night of carnage at the Mc
Beth farm near Hayesville,
Iowa.
Smith, 24, a farmhand and
ex-Marine, was captured in a
barn near Unionville. Iowa.
40 miles from Hayesville, on
Memorial Day, following a
three-day man hunt.
Denied Knowledge
Smith's attorney, Stephen
Gerard, told United Press In
ternational his client denied
any knowledge of his step
mother's death.
Mrs. Smith apparently was
last seen alive Oct. 2, 1961,
when she made a bank depos
it. Her stepson said she had
left for California and there
had been no apparent concern
about her until the ilayings
of the McBeth family. Then
her sister, Mrs. Irene Brown,
