Steelhead
Cards Due
On July 1
Portland - Salmon and
steelhead anglers are again
asked to cooperate in the
management of these great
game fish ' by returning to
the game commission the sal-mon-steelhead
punch card
purchased during the 1961
season.
Phil Schneider, state game
director, reported many
punch cards already return
ed by anglers since the begin
ning of the year, but said that
more than one-half of the al
most 190,000 salmon and
sieclhoad cards issued are
still being retained by ang-
glers.
According to the law, these
punch cards must be return
ed to the game commission by
July 1 following the expira
tion date at the end of the
calendar year. The time limi
tation is now less than a
month away. Schneider said
that failure to comply with
this regulation could result in
the individual being denied a
salmon-steelhead license.
Cards Important
Although the commission
has been reluctant to deny
anyone the privilege of sal
mon and steelhead angling
for failure to return the
punch card, Schneider advis
ed that the importance of
these cards toward the future
of these great game fish can
not be overemphasized.
These are the game fish,
Schneider said, which have
been much in the news in re
lation to multiple and other
uses of the water resources
of the stale. In this respect,
Schneider continued, reliable
records and facts are an ab
solute necessity in determin
ing water needs for fishery
purposes.
Schneider advised anglers
that because of the low re
turn of punch cards in the
past the accuracy of the cal
culated salmon and steelhead
catch, magnitude of the runs,
angling pressures, and many
other important factors are
often questioned in regard to
water development and use.
In the adjudication and use of
water, more accurate records
could be highly beneficial to
the salmon and steelhead re
sources, Schneider said.
Collection Boxes
To assist anglers, the game
commission has provided all
licensed agents with collec
tion boxes for the punch
cards. The cards may also be
returned to the commission
at 1634 S.W. Alder in Port
land. Schneider mentioned that
the states of Washington and
Idaho are following Oregon's
pattern in collecting steel
head information by provid
ing anglers with a punch card
system. This is a cooperative
venture by the three states to
maintain the highly popular
and important salmon and
steelhead resources. The back
ing of all anglers is needed to
insure the success of this pro
gram, Schneider said.

The Texans smashed Colo

other squads from the original
eight-team field Tuesday.
Missouri didn't give up
easily. After Santa Clara un
tied a 1-1 knot with a pair of
runs in the eighth and added
another in the top of the
ninth, it looked blue for the
Tigers. But they cracked five
singles, scored three runs and
forced an overtime. But the
Missouri defense collapsed in

one hit, Tom Cullen's leadoff
single, and Mizzo committed
three errors as the Broncos
rushed to victory.
