A chimpanzee was ejected in
a new rocket-powered escape
capsule from a supersonic
BS8 bomber and recovered
sfely Friday as a prelude to
the first ejection of a man at
speeds faster than. sound. .
. The 104-pound chimp, Zena
9, landed safely at this base
after being triggered from
the Hustler bomber flying at
supersonic rpeed 45,000 feet
above the Mojave desert. He
was retrieved nine minutes
later in apparent good condl
tion.
Tests will be conducted on
the chimp tp see how he fared
Jn the "crucial" experiment.
Zeno was ejected at 1060
miles an hour and fell 30,000
feet in the capsule before its
main chute opened.

The Shrike Strikes But
It's Pari of Nature's Plan
Looking very innocent and
demure, the little gray and
black bird sat on the clothes
line, its sharp little eyes scan
ning every Inch of the garden,!
watching especially the group
of sparrows that were shoul
dering one. another at the
feeding tray.
The housewife, interested
In all kinds of birds, had fol
lowed her usual procedure
6f placing the grain on the
tray, then retiring to her com
fortable chair on the back
porch while she watched the
bird antics.
She already had identified
the gray bird on the clothes
line as a loggerhead shrike.
and wondered why it was
waiting there. She knew it
was not at all interested in the
grain.

' It also happened that sne
was -watching at the very in
stant the gray-and-b lack-
marked bird swooped down
on a passing spBrrow, knock
ing the smaller bird violently
to the ground. The shrike,
barely larger than the spar
row, began delivering sharp
blows to the other's head
There was a mad scramble for
a brief moment but the spar
row was caught.
The lady rushed to the
rescue.. The shrike returned
to the clothesline, but the
lady had been too late.
The little gray and black
bird didn't wait long after the
lady left. He flew down,
grabbed the limp form in his
slightly hooked beak and
flew away.
The experience gave' the
lady pause to think., It all
seemed pretty cruel. On such
a beautiful day, and in such
a quiet, peaceful garden, it
was not at all the kind of set
ting for violence and murder.
But was it murder? Nature
so often seems cruel, but it all
must be according to plan.
Bird-Murder Infraquent
Not too often does the mg
gerhead shrike resort to bird
murder. More often .the bird
preys on insects, being
especially fond of grasshop
pers. But when grasshoppers
and other Insects are in short
supply, it will kill some small
birds if conditions are at all
favorable. ,
The lady realized, too, that
perhaps the limp form of the
slaughtered sparrow would
be hanging from some sharp
thorn or suspended from the
barb of a fence. Such is the
usual procedure of the shrike,
and the main reason why It is
so often called the "butcher
bird." The lady could see that the
shrike showed no anger: no
revenge motivated the killing.
The bird was not killing for
sport, but only following the
natural inclination of a bird
of prey. It was the law of the
wild.
What the shrike did in that
peaceful garden was only tor
the procurement of food. He
killed so that he could eat; no
different, really, and no more
cruel than the man who
butchers cattle, sheep or hogs,
and later eats the flesh.
Two Women Appear
In Circuit Court ,
Two women appeared In
Jackson county circuit court
last week. One had her case
continued until Monday to en
ter a plea, and the other was
placed on probation for five
years.
Mrs. Betsy DeLois Board-
man, 28, of 41 Fifth St.. Ash
land was placed on probation
for five years for unlawfully
obtaining public assistance.
Helen Fossett Rodgers, 41. of
433 Granite St., Ashland, was
arraigned on a charge of ut
tering and publishing a false
check and her case was con
tinued until 11 a.m. Monday.

not? .
Laona B. - My father-in-
law is dying. It's a rather hys
terical period for my husband
and his family. You can under
stand the attachment better
when I reveal that we live
near Karri parents and in
the four years of our mar
riage he never missed a day
visiting them.. Even during
our vacations, we had to
phone them, no matter where
we were. He's a real mamma'x
boy. .
Now that my mother-in-law
is aware of the gravity of her
husband's illness, she states
flatly that she will not live
alone. My husband calms her
down, tells her not to worry.
he'll take care of her. In
private he tells me he wants
fier to make her home with us.
Knowing how close he Is to
her, I feel he'll become 100
per cent son and zero-per cent
husband if that happens. As
things are, lie s 05 per cent
wrapped up in them, with
precious little interest in our
home and marriage.
Karl B-At this trying time
Leona is adding to my head
achea with her nagging about
tne future.
I only want to act human.
Anything I do for my family
stand ready to do for her
family. It happens that her
folks live a few towns down
the line, so we don't visit them
as frequently as mine. And if
there were a similar crisis in
her parents' home as the one
now facing my poor mother. I
wouldn't hesitate to make
room In our home for the
lonely survivor.
Leona is behaving selfishly.
If her parents were In a pre
dicament like mine, I couldn't
look on and say the heartless
things she says. I'd try to
help. I know I wouldn't be
able to rest easy one day if I
felt my mother was miserable.
I try to keep up her spirits.

Your husband Is laboring
under great emotional strain.
You are unfeeling to bring up
the matter of your mother-in-law's
future, of her not being
acceptable in your home, at

Let his face, the pain in his
eyes, be your cue as to what
to say.
If you are bursting with
pique over Karl's neglect of
you, keep that a separate prob
lem - and It Is a problem -to
be unraveled patiently dur
ing your future years togeth
er. A marriage counselor
might be invoked In order to
see what lies behind your'
Jealousy of his filial attentive-1
ness. and his compulsive "pa-i
ternalism" toward his par-1
ents. Once some of the drives
are understood, measures may
be taken to make Karl at least ;
a 50-50 husband in your eyes.
But on the present prob
lem, your objections to your
husband's visits sound ghoul
ish. Your resentment, seeth
ing during those many duty I
visits to your in-laws and 1
even during those long-dis-i
tance phone calls to "head-1
quarters" from vacation spots,
is now at a boil. It was prob
ably never concealed. What
about your vows as a help
mate? Now's the time to con
centrate on helping and sus
taining, rather than making a j
heavy burden heavier.
In this world self-love Isn't
enough. A mature adult reach
es out to love others, even
though all love may be tinged
with self interest. Bogged
down in self-love, Leona must
extend whatever love she fools
for Karl to his mother also.
Surely she ran "scare up" a
few crumbs! If not love, com-
passion will do. It was her
sort of coldness which made I
one parent say recently, "You
bear them, then they can't
bear you."
There may be good reasons
why Mrs. B. ought not triple
up with Leona and Karl. A
neutral outsider can be en
listed to hash out the merits
of alternate arrangements.
But today is not the day to
seek a solution for a long-
range resettlement project. To
day is for softness, sympathy
and sensitivity.
