'King' of Gypsies Blames Newcomers
Portland-IUPD-T h e "King"
of Portland's gypsies laid the
blame for the city's trouble
with his group on "newcom
ers" Friday.
Frank Ellis, who has been
king for the past four years,
said he wants to "roust them
out."
"We don't want no more
gypsies moving into town,"
he said. Ellis said he gets
along with the police and dis
cusses with them matters of
mutual concern.
Earlier last week. Mayor
Terry Schrunk said the police
department was advised to
"crack down" on gypsies who
violate housing codes, and
keep their children out of
school. Schrunk expressed
concern at the number of gyp
sies moving into Portland and
becoming enrolled with coun
ty welfare agencies.

Jurisdiction Over
Road in Question
The Jackson county court
plans to ask the forest service
which government agency
will have jurisdiction over
the Mt. Ashland rd. to a pro
Dosed ski area.
The forest service has
aarced to construct the road
using $200,000 from O and C
association funds. The state
highway commission has
agreed to keep snow elearea,
and Jackson county has
agreed to maintain it.
However, county officials
are wondering which agency
would be responsible for the
road in case of a slide, or
other such incidents.
The question arose when
the forest service requested
quit claim deeds from the
county for land along the
county s Coleslinc rd. The
Colestone rd located at the
top of the Siskiyous, goes to
the hill area to the west. The
upper bend of the road would
be realigned to form the en
trance road to the proposed
Mt. Ashland ski area, County
Judge Earl Miller said.
