Corvair Monza, a family car that rather thinly disguises its desire to be a
sports car; and the Corvette, America's out-and-out sports car that'll put a

Market Value of
Farm Real Estate
At Record Figure
Washington -OIPIl- The Ag
riculture Department said to
day the total market value of
farm real estate in the 48
contiguous states moved up
ward to a record $138 billion
in the year ending March 1.
This represented an in
crease of $6 billion, or 5 per
cent, over a year earlier. The
department said the outlook
is for a moderate advance in
the six months after March 1.
The total market value of
farm real estate represented
an average of $123.18 an acre.
The average farm was valued
at more than $41,000, of
which buildings contributed
about $8,500 and land about
$32,800.
Cropland Figured
In a review of farm real
estate market developments.
the department's Economic
Research Service said new
estimates of market values of
various classes of land show
that cropland was valued at
$67.5 billion as of March 1,
1960, or two-thirds of the
value of all land in farms. 1
Pasture land, although ac
counting for 47 per cent of
all land area in farms, had a
value of $26.3 billion, or 26
per cent of the total value of
all farmland.
Cropland in the 35 humid
states as of March 1, I960,
averaged $159 per acre, but
the high values attached to
irrigated land used for cotton
and fruit and nut crops
California raised the average
value for all irrigated crop
land in the 13 semi-arid states
to more than $500 an acre.
The 48-state average for all
cropland was $177 per acre.
The department said there
was not much sales activity in
the rural land market in
1961-62. Competition was
stiff, however, for the limited
amount of land that was for
sale.
