The economy of the entire
Pacific Northwest was flirting
with disaster today as labor
disputes continued to grow in
two of its largest summertime
industries - construction and
lumber.
The lumbering industry was
being plagued from Southeast
Alaska to Northern California
and from Missoula, Mont., to
the Pacific Coast.
Construction was being
stymied throughout Washing
ton, Western Oregon and
Northern Idaho.
Thousands of construction
men are on strike, thousands
of others are out of work be
cause of strikes, and more
than $300 million worth of
construction projects are cith
er stopped or hampered be
cause of the disputes. Unions
involved represent carpenters,
ironworkers, teamsters, and
operating engineers, as well
as other craft unions such as
pavers and laborers.

Lumbar Threat
While disputes in the lum

reached the proportions of
that in construction, the threat
was definite.
Lumber and Sawmill Work
ers Union members in Peshas
tin, Wash., Missoula, Mont.,
and Wallowa, Ore., went on
strike at box and white pine
sash mills in those communi
ties. Workers at the White Pine
Sash Co. in Spokane said they
would observe picket lines ex

city by Missoula local mem
bers. Meanwhile, scheduled nego

International Woodworkers of
America and firms in Eastern
Washington, Northern Idaho
and Western Montana were
bogged down because federal
mediators were swamped with
other negotiations.

land, Ore., Tuesday to discuss
a new wage agreement in a
two-year contract which was
reopened this year for wages
only. The TOC represent
about 191 lumber operators
in Oregon, Washington, South
east Alaska and Northern
California.
Meat Today
A meeting was scheduled to
day between the TOC and the
Lumber and Sawmill Workers
Union, which like the IWA
seeks a 30-cent hourly wage
increase.
. The two union groups at
workers west of the Cascade
Mountains.
The timber negotiations
come at a time when mill
owners are arguing they can
not stay in business unless
they get some relief in their
competition with Canadian
producers.
But the big headache comes
in the construction business.
Gov. Albert D. Rosellini of
Washington met behind closed
doors with union and manage
ment representatives in an ef
fort to find some means of
ending disputes in the con
struction industry. Rosellini
said both sides were "anxious
to reach agreement but other
than that, he could report no
progress."
Hagan Assigned
Rosellini assigned Jerry
Hagan, director of the State
Department of Labor and In
dustrie, to meet with both
sides and to be available for
further meetings if it ap
peared worthwhile.
. State officials pointed out
that strikes had affected more
than $42 million worth of
state building projects and
$54 million worth of highway
contracts.
In eastern Washington and
Northern Idaho, more than
hampered.
In addition. Southwest
Washington, Western Oregon
and the Columbia River valley
were hurting, particularly be
cause of the Ironworkers
strike which prevented work
on bridges, dams and other
heavy construction.
And as if it weren't already
bad enough, about 10,000 cul
inary workers, hotel maids
and bartenders were threaten
ing to strike against the Wash
ington State Restaurant and
Hotel Association, an action,
which if it came to pass,
could almost spell doom this
region s top proaucers,
tourist trade.
