Germany To Have Unified

Diamond Lake Stocking
To Be of Native Trout
Tiv,aBsj&eMsja ' at' T' a wmmmmmmmmK
LOCAL ENTRY IN SHOOT Henry Niedermeyer, above, is
one of Medford Gun club's top shooters and will be among
contenders this week end when the Oregon State trapshoot
of the Pacific International Trapshooting association is con
ducted at the local layout on East Vilas rd. west of Crater
Lake highway. The shoot will run Friday, Saturday and
Sunday, drawing gunners from a number of western states.
Entry is anticipated at 400 shooters. The state event returns
to the Medford club after four year's absence. Niedermeyer
is a member of the PITA men's all-star trap team.-
By JOSEPH Y. SMITH
Moscow -(UPb- With the "po
litical" phase of the Interna
tional Olympic commitee's an
nual meeting practically dis
posed of, members get down
today to more pertinent ques
tions closer related to sports.
Tuesday the committee
calmed socialist bloc nations'
fears by confirming that a
unified German team will rep
resent that divided nation in
the 1964 games in Austria and
Japan; took steps to promote
entry of a joint team from
North and South Korea; and
rejected a Soviet effort to ex
pand the committee member
ship on a national basis.
The case of Germany, which
has fielded a joint team from
East and West Germany in the
Portland - Diamond lake
anglers will soon be taking a
different race of rainbow
trout than the one they've
been catching each year since
the lake was opened to an
gling following chemical treat
ment by the game commission
in 1954.
This Is the word from
Chuck Campbell, chief of
fisheries for the commission,'
who said that future stocking
of Diamond lake will be made
from native rainbow stocks
developed from McKenzie and
Deschutes river fish. Eventual
ly, Campbell said, the native
rainbow will replace the Kam
loops rainbow which now
populates the lake.
To set the stage for the
gradual change-over, 150,000
fingerling rainbows from the
game commission's Roarding
River hatchery near Scio were
released in Diamond lake two
weeks ago followed by the
plant of another 150,000 this
past week from the Oak
Springs hatchery on the Deschutes.
These youngsters will be
appearing in the catch as 8
to 10 inchers by this tall,
Campbell does not believe
anglers will be able to tell
the difference, though, be-
Campbell said, since it readily
hits wet or dry flies. How
ever, too many anglers are
not proficient in this type of
angling and ' are unable to
take the Kamloops rainbow
during most of the season on
regular baits and lures.
To solve the problem and
provide better angling for
everyone, the game commis
sion will test out two differ
ent races of fish, a late fall
spawning rainbow developed
from McKenzie brood stocks
and an early spring spawner
developed at the Oak Springs
plant. The two lots of fish
already stocked in the lake
represent fish from each race.
(Campbell believes these fish
will produce eggs earlier in
the season than do the present
Kamloops stocks and over a
short period of time. If this
proves to be the case, the
early spring spawners will be
back in the lake and in fair
to good condition when an
glers move in on opening day.
mere are mixed feelings
about the change-over, Camp
bell said, with opposition com
ing mostly from fly anglers
who like the aerial eymnastics
of the Canadian rainbow. But
most anglers have voiced ap
provat oi tne cnange - over,
tween the native rainbow and said Campbell, and old timers
the Canadian Kamloops since who fished Diamond lake dur
it is extremely difficult for
even biologists to differenti
ate between the two.
The reason for the change
over is twofold, according to
Campbell. First, the late
spring spawning of the Kam
loops rainbow found many
fish in dark and undesirable
condition from two to three
weeks following the normal
opening of the lake to anglers.
Many fishermen voiced their
disapproval of catching these
spawning fish. Secondly, fish
ermen consistently voiced
their disapproval of catching
these spawning fish. Second
ly, fishermen consi s t e n 1 1 y
voiced their dissatisfaction
with the temperamental Ca
nadian import, which seemed
to strike on a hit-or-miss basis.
This was especially true from
midsummer to season's end
when the fish would go on a
hunger strike and refuse to
hit bait or lure.
Fly fishermen like the fish.

Win in Row
United Press International
Pitcher George Gerberman
of Wenatchee seems to be get
ting the hang of things.
Gerberman, who lost his
first two Northwest League
starts of the season, Tuesday
night racked up his sixth in a
row as Wenatchee topped Tri-
City, 5-3.
Eugene topped Lewlston 5-3
and 3-2 and Salem edged Yak
ima 3-2 in their opener only
to drop a 10-4 decision in the
nightcap.
Gerberman spaced three
Tri-City hits and the most
damaging blow off him was a
two-run homer by Adolph
Suarez in the second. How
ever, Danny Murphy and Nel
son Matthews each hit two-
run homers for Wenatchee
and Frank DeMoff hit a solo
homer for all the Chiefs'
markers.
Bill Kelso's two-run double
in the seventh gave Salem its
first-game win over Yakima.
However, the Bears came
back with seven runs in the
sixth inning of the nightcap
to give the victory to Jerry
Glynn. A three-run homer by
Ethan Black was the big blow
of the frame.
Bob Perez of Lewiston
belted a three-run homer in
the Lewiston-Eugene opener
but Eugene scored the event
ual winning run in the fifth.
The Emeralds got but one
earned run in the second
game but got two gift markers
and pitcher Ed Feldman made
them stand up.

got tougher after that.
The Vikings got their first
