William McLeod, assistant pastor of Sacred Heart church, who celebrated the 25th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood on May 22, was honored last recently by a reception in his honor at St. Mary's school gymnasium. Clergy of the Portland dio cese will honor Father Mc Leod Tuesday, June 5. at a dinner at the Rogue Valley Country club. It will follow a pontificial high mass at Sacred Heart church at 5 p.m. with the Most Rev. Edward D. Howard, archbishop of Portland, as celebrant. During the reception an original portrait of Father McLeod, painted by Mrs. Cora L. McMahan, was unveiled. It will eventually be hung in the library of the new St. Mary's High school. A purse was presented at the same time to the honored guest contributed by his many friends and parishioners in the community. Presentation was made by Thomas W. Dugan, master of MEDFORDttJTRIBUNE SECTION B LAST WEEK IN State Leads in Traffic Deaths During First Summer Holiday By United Press International California led the nation in traffic deaths per usual during the 30-hour Memorial Day holiday. At least IS persons died on California highways during the season's first big outdoor holiday. Eight fatalities were re corded in southern California and seven died in the north ern part of the state. Michigan was second on the grim count with nine dead. Elsewhere, there were these deevlopments: Everyman: Three pacifists kicked up a storm in San Francisco after being stopped by federal officials as they attempted to sail their trim aran, the Everyman, 'to the U.S. nuclear test zone in the Pacific. One of the men, Ed ward Lazar, 27, refused to walk and had to be carried off the craft. Then throughout court proceedings during the week he had to be rolled in by wheelchuir. The other two sailors were Harold Stallings, 30, and Dick Yoes, 30. They were charged with contempt for ignoring a federal court injunction for bidding their sailing. Later in the week, about 25 demon strators protested in the fed eral court building against ar rest of the trio. Construction: Northern Cal ifornia's month-old construc tion tieup appeared near an end. Contractors' represents, tives and negotiators for the striking AFL-CIO laborers union were reported close to agreement. The strike began May 1 when the laborers un ion began scattered walkouts. Contractors responded by or dering a general shutdown of their $3.5 billion-a-year indus try. Chinese: Gov. Edmund G. Brown said he expected no problem at all In caring for Chinese refugees coming to settle in California from famine-plagued Communist China. He expressed hopes the refugees could move into the state's agricultural economy in some way "and help our shortage of farm labor." In San Francisco, the Chinese Six Companies gave its full support to a proposal that would permit 30.000 to 50,000 refugees from Hong Kong to enter the United States. The proposal was scheduled to be introduced by Rep. John F. Shelley. D-Calif. Maritime: The United States Court of Appeals ruled that West Coast seamen can strike again June 29 regard less of whether their ships have cargo to be unloaded. The court overruled a Federal District Judge who had said seamen could not leave their ships if they struck again. The appeals court in San Francisco held, however, that ihe seaman cannot refuse to sign shipping articles for nor mal lengths of time during : the current 80-day Taft-Hart-! ' le injunction period. The in- junction was invoked April ill, and tentatively ended a I ! West Coast shipping strike. Carl Mai, pastor of Sacred Heart church, and the Rev, John Ilg, assist ant pastor, both who had assisted Father McLeod at his anniversary solemn High mass that morning, spoke. Entertainment for the re ception was provided by the Marian choir under the direc tion of Sister Miriam Joseph accompanied by Miss Marilyn Guldan. Solo parts were sung by Miss Patty Meeker and James Calhoun. Father McLeod was born in Cape'.town, Quebec, Can ada, and came west to Pendle ton, Ore., in 1922, to assume the duties of prefect for St. Andrew's mission on the In dian reservation. In 1927. he moved to Mt. Angel where he taught and studied until 1933 when he graduated with a degree in philosophy. To further his studies for the religious life, Father McLeod entered St. Patrick's seminary at Menlo Park, Calif., where he spent four years in theology. He received the orders of sub deacon and deacon from the Most Rev. John Joseph Mitty, archbishop of San Francisco, and in 1936, upon his return to Portland, he was ordained on May 22 by the Most Rev. Edward D. Howard. First Assignment Father McLeod's first as signment was in Marshficld as assistant pastor, where he ministered to the needs of the people between Powers to Harbor. Later he was trans ferred to St. Stephens church in Portland. While there he taught for two years at St. Stephens High school. Transport Crashes At Crescent City Crescent City, Calif. -.IUPP - A military transport crashed on takeoff here Sunday and burned, injuring all six serv icemen aboard. The plane, a D1A, was en route from Fort Ord, Calif., to Fort Lewis, Wash., when it landed at Crescent City, On takeoff the craft got air borne and then plunged into a field.
