A squabble broke out as a
Florida family made
plans to go boating on a recent
sunny Saturday morning. Sis
wanted to water ski, Junior
wanted to skin dive, Dad had
his heart set on fishing, and
Mom longed for a quiet sail
followed by a picnic.
Before the day was over, each
member of the family was able to
do what he or she wanted. The rea
son: they own a versatile, 1962
model boat an 18-foot fiber-glass
craft that cost only $2,000 but has
both a sailing rig and a 25-horse-power
outboard motor.
With its sails up, the boat carried
the family out to an island. On the
way, Dad trolled a line behind and
caught three fish, while Mom closed
her eyes and relaxed in the warm
sun. When they got to the island.
Mom set up a picnic beachhead as
Dad and the youngsters lowered the
sails, took the two-piece aluminum
mast apart, and stowed it under the
deck. Then they took Sis out for
some water skiing. Later, while
Mom and Sis explored the island,
Dad anchored the boat offshore and
Junior donned a snorkel tube and
fins and did some skin diving.
In late afternoon the wind died
down, but the family didn't worry.
They sped home at 20 miles an hour
under outboard-motor power.
This family's varied day would
have surprised most boatowners as
recently as five years ago. Boating
was just then coming into its own,
and newcomers contented them
selves with open craft that were

nothing more than overgrown row
boats with motors hung on the back.
All they were good for was running
around in a nautical form of auto
joy riding.
Today, both boaters and their
boats are more sophisticated. A
family that wants recreation afloat
this summer has a wide range of
,iew craft to choose from.
A popular trend is to inboard
outboard power installations. They
are suitable for craft in the 17
to 24-foot category, either open
boats or compact cabin cruisers.
Prices range upward from $3,000.
This type of unit combines the
advantages of both inboards and
outboards while doing away with
some of the disadvantages of both.
Fuel economy results from using
an inboard engine. The four
cycle operation eats up less gas than
two-cycle outboards of the same
power (about 100 horsepower).
Another four-cycle advantage is
that it uses permanent lube oil, thus
eliminating the nuisance and ex
pense of mixing lube oil with gas,
as is necessary in large outboards.
The advantages of an outboard
are retained by mounting the engine
in the very back of the boat and
coupling it to an outboard drive unit
on the outside. Space is saved in the
cockpit and vibration is lessened.
