The mysterious scurrying
on the roofNat night is prob

squirrel. The damaged shrubs,
or ruined Iruit on the back
yard tree, or the damaged
bark hasn't necessarily been
caused by a rabbit.
Tree, plant and flower dam
age were some of the troubles
of the man who owned and
operated a large nursery and
greenhouse. Over a period of
only a few months he had
lost many dollars' worth of
valuable plants by rodents.
Well-meaning but poorly in
formed friends told him re
peatedly to "poison those lou
sy rabbits and squirrels be
fore they eat you out of house
and greenhouse.'
The man listened with re
spect and caution, He secured
pamphlets, circulars and bul
letin! on post control. The
lame information was contain
ed in all of them, Added to
the list of pests were many
animals, In fact all the native
animals of the area.
All Enemie
Beading the supposedly
learned Writings, one would
naturally think all the ani
mals of the wild were ene
mies and must be eliminated.
All were inplied to be align
ed against man and his works.
But few of the pamphlets
listed what the man believ
ed to be hit real enemy . . .
the genuine culprit . . . the
one least suspected and never
seen. The man made a plan
and at the same time let him
self in for all kinds of com
plications. He was thinking consider
ably ahead of hit contempor
aries. He purchased four of
the largest native snakes his
animal farm could supply:
two black snakes and two
king snakes, He liberated
them near a large crack in
the masonry wall that sup
ported one of his greenhouses.
It wasn't long before the
man had to search carefully
to find a damaged plant or
tree, in spite of the evident
fact that the rabbits and squlr
relswera still plentiful. Nel
ther did he hear the scurry
ing of hurrying feet on the
ronf or In the Rttic at night
He Began to see morn
snakes, torn Of them small.
All wera fat and sleek, and
obviosuly well fed. The snake's
had eaten nearly all the rats
that had. been drtlhg maai Of
the damage.

became . obnoxiously evident,
almost as bad as the plant
damaga before. Almost every
day the man would hear pen
pie hunting In the bushes just
outside the nursery. They
were wild - eyed Individuals,
armed with clubs, guns or
garden tools. They were ex
cited men and boys; they had
seen a snake and were brave
ly ready to battle against s
traditional enemy.
About all the destructive
rats had been calen now. The
nurseryman had saved his
plants, but now he hnt to
fight' to save his friends, the
snakes. At the siime time he
has learned a great truth
