Called an "Octapla." it is a
Biblical "family tree," tracing I
the evolution of the Scrip
tures as known to the English
speaking world from their
roots in 16th Century Eng
land to 20th Century Ameri
ca. The development of the
Bible is told in words, rather
than in drawings and dia
grams of the usual family
tree, however. This is a 1.500
page volume with the official
title of "The New Testament
Octapla," containing eight
parallel versions of scriptures,
from the Tyndale New Testa
ment of 1525-35 to the Re
vised Standard Version of
1946-60.

pages, are the Great Bible of
1540, the Geneva Bible of
1562, the Bishops' Bible of
1602, te Rhcims New Testa
ment of 1582, the King James
Version of 1873 and the
American Standard Version
of 1901.
There have been many
other English-language ver
sions and translations of the
New Testament during these
centuries, but for purposes of
genealogy and scholarship,
these are the Bibles that are
regarded as being in "the
TyndaleKing James tradi
tion." The King James Ver
sion grew out of the earlier
efforts and in turn inspired
the later ones included in
the Octapla.
Only once before has there
been an Octapla. A portion
of the Old Testament was
prodr"-' in the 3rd Century
with a Hebrew and seven
Greek versions. A Hexapla
appeared in England in 1841,
containing a nr.i text f
the New Testament and six
English translations.

Dr. Wcigle took his idea to
William R. McCullov. presi
dent of Thomas Nelson and
Sons of New York, soon after
Nelson had published the re-
vised standard version. Mc-
Cullcy saw in the Octapla an
opportunity to produce a vol
ume for posterity and put a
staff of experts at Dr. Wei-
glc's disposal.
Dr. Weigle supervised the
laborious work that went into
the Octapla. Mu-h of task
was performed by Mrs. Bcr
nice Rich. Nelson's Bible
editor. She copied the text
of the Tyndale New Testa
ment from a tiny volume in
the rarebook room at the New
York Public Library, owner
of the book, and served as
chief proofreader of the en
tire Octapla.
Verias Coordinated
Every verse and every page
had to be coordinated so they
were absolutely parallel. To
give an ,J"a of the subtle
evolution of much of the Bib
lical language, here are the
eight versions of the begin
ning of "The Lord's Prayer":
