Milk Dealers'
Bid for Price
Cut Rejected
Salem-IUPIl-The Oregon Ag
riculture department has re
jected a bid by milk dealers
to cut the amount they pay to
milk farmers. Also denied was
their request for Portland
dealers to withdraw from the
large milk area created by
the department last month.
The decision was handed
down by Kenneth W. Sawyer,
administrator of the 1961 pro
ducer milk stabilization act.
The petitioners were the
Portland Milk and Ice Cream
Dealers association, and 13 in
dividual milk dealers.
The dealers now pay produ
cers $5.52 per 100 pounds of
milk and wanted this cut by
12 cents in the Portland - Sa
lem milk shed, and in Cen
tral Oregon. They also sought
cuts in dealer prices to pro
ducers in Eugene, Corvallis
and Hoseburg.
Based on Hearing
Sawyer's decision was based
on a hearing here May 14
attended by several hundred
dairymen.
Dealers said they had to
have the cut because they
were losing money. There
were complaints about milk
from upstate Washington cut
ting into Vancouver, Wash.,
traditionally a market for
Portland suppliers.
Oregon milk farmers fought
the petition and said dealer
losses are due to discounts
and rebates they give to re
tailers, and other factors.
Sawyer said these argu
ments could be resolved "only
by a complete fiscal audit."
He added that Washington
state milk, in Seattle for in
stance, has dropped recently
by a cut in federal price sup
ports. ield Urges
Opposition To Bill

field has sent telegrams to
the four Oregon members of
the U.S. House urging them
to oppose a Senate bill that
Hatfield said would "serious
ly restrict the use of youth in
the harvest of our crops."
It appears there haven't
been adequate hearings on the
legislation, the governor said.
The bill, which has passed
the Senate, would impose new
restrictions on the hiring of
those between 12 and 14 who
help with the Oregon harvest
when school lets out.
Hatfield sent the telegram
In response to a plea by a
group of Dayton farmers and
others who said the proposed
act would cripple the harvest
In Yamhill county, where
. farmers rely on youngsters
from Portland and the coast
to help out. The bill would
restrict locations of where 12
to 14-year olds could work.
