Medical Care for
Fishermen Voted
Washington UPli The Sen
ate Commerce Committee
has approved a medical care
proposal for fishermen.
The measure would allow
some 11,000 self-employed
fishermen or owner-operators
of fishing vessels to obtain
medical care under the public
health service act.
Sen. Warren Magnuson (D
Wash.), chairman of the com
mittee, said that thousands of
fishermen shared medical
services provided by the gov
ernment until 1954.
However, in 1954, an ad
ministrative ruling excluded
working owners or part own
ers of fishing boats from medi
cal care benefits, limiting
them only to crew members,
Magnuson and Sen. E. L.
B a r I 1 e 1 1 (D-Alaska), intro
duced the legislation.
