Ray Moore tells everyone
he's 35, an out-and-out fib, but
there's no getting around the
fact that he's the man who is
keeping those persistent Min
nesota Twins moseying around
the top of the American
league.
The gray-haired, pipe-smoking
Moore, closer to 40 than
35, has been pressed into re
lief in three of the Twins' last
four games and has won two
of (hem.
"Our rookies, like Rich Rol
lins and Bernie Allen, have
done a tremendous Job," says
manager Sam Mole, "but
Moore has been our real life
saver." The veteran right-hander

he was credited with a 6-3 vic
tory over the Washington
Senators that moved the
Twins into a virtual tie for
first place with the New York
Yankees.
Relieves In Eighth
Moore, who calls everyone
else "Horse," cantered out of
the bullpen In the eighth in
ning with Washington runners
on first and second and one
out. He Immediately Induced
Danny O'Connell and Chuck
Cottier to pop up and then
protected his one-run lead
through the ninth.
Moore was Minnesota's
fourth pitcher and actually
came into the game with the
Twins leading by one run. The
official scorer awarded him
the victory, his third of the
season, because he felt Moore
had been the most effective
Minnesota hurler after start
er Georges Maranda failed to
survive the fifth.
The Twins broke a 2-2 tie
in the third with a four-run
rally highlighted by Bob Al
lison's two-run single. Lennie
Green and Chuck Cottier hit
homers.
In other AL games, the
Yankees shaded the Los An
geles Angels, 2-1, in 12 in
nings; the Baltimore Orioles
beat the Cleveland Indians,
4-1, and the Kansas City A's
handed the Boston Red Sox
their eighth straight loss,
5-1. The Tigers and White
Sox were idle.
Cards Extend Streak
The St. Louis Cardinals ran
their winning streak to six
games in the National league
with a 6-2 win over the Phila
delphia Phillies; the Los An
geles Dodgers downed the
first - place San Francisco
Giants, 5-1; the Cincinnati
Reds beat the Milwaukee
Braves, 3-2, in 11 innings; the
Houston Colts nipped the New
York Mets, 3-2, and the Chi
cago Cubs defeated the Pitts
burgh Pirates, 3-1.
Elston Howard's sacrifice
fly with the bases loaded in
the 12th gave the Yankees
their victory over the Angels
Four Yankee pitchers, Whitey
Ford, Jim Coates, Bud Daley
and Bob Turlcy collaborated
in a one-hit effort - Bob Rodg
ers collecting the Angels' only
hit, a single with one out in
the ninth off Coates. Ford left
the game with a muscle strain
in his left shoudcr after pitch
ing seven hitlcss innings,
Turlcy was the winner and
Tom Morgan the loser.
A pair of home runs by Jim
Gentile, his 11th and 12th of
the season, and one by pitcher
Milt Pappas, his third, power
ed the Orioles to victory over
the Indians. Pappas, who hcid

fifth victory. Jim Perry was

Jiminez Homers
Dave Wickersham and Die
go Segul combined to hold the
Red Sox to five hits as Man
nie Jiminez provided the Ath

two-run homer off loser Galen
Cisco. Bob Tillman homered
for Boston's only run.
Bob Gibson won his sixth
game for the Cardinals, strik
ing out nine and holding the
Phillies to four hits. He lost
his shutout in the ninth when
Johnny Callison rapped a
two-run homer. Three Phila
delphia errors paved the way
for Paul Brown's first defeat.
The victory moved t h e
Cards to within 2Vt games of
the Giants, who were limited
to five hits by winner Stan
Williams and reliever Larry
Sherry. Tommy Davis hit a
two - run homer, his second
against the Giants in as many
games. Jack Sanfnrd was the
losing pitcher.
Norm Larker's two - run
triple in the eighth inning
gave the Colts their second
straight victory over the Mets.
Dick Farrell went the distance
for Houston and scattered 10
hits for his fourth victory.
Loser Jay Hook, who also
went Ihe distance, gave up
only seven hits, including a
fourth inning homer by Ro
man Mejias.
George Altman accounted
for all the Cubs' runs against

homer and a pair of singles.
