Rural America
Urged To Study
World Affairs
Washington -(HPD- The mas
ter of the National Grange
saya rural America should
turn its attention increasingly
to group, national, and inter
national affairs in the coming
years.
Herschel Newsom, the
Grange leader, spoke in
Washington to the closing
session -of the World Food
Forum, a three day event
opening the celebration of the
centennial of the Department
of Agriculture.
Newsom took part in a
panel discussion on the next
100 years of rural life.
Something Mora Naaded
Newsom said that in the
early years of the nation, it
was usually enough for rural
Americans to accept their own
individual responsibi 1 i 1 1 e s.
But for the decades ahead, the
farm leader says something
more will be needed - accept
ing responsibility as a nation
to help meet the health and
nutrition problems of the rest
of the world.
Newsom pointed out that
about one-third of the world's
people have only recently
gained political freedom. He
said that very early in the
next 100 years, these people
will be seeking freedom from
hunger,
