Azalea Festival !
Plans Announced;
Parade Scheduled
Brookings The annual
Azalea Festival will get under
way here Saturday, May 26,
with a parade starting at 10
a.m., and coronation of the
queen at Azalea State park
at 11 a.m.
Other first day events in
clude a seafood luncheon at
the Sporthaven on the south ;
Jetty, and a rodeo at 2:30
p.m. at the rodeo grounds.

Events scheduled through
out the day include the Aza
lea Garden club flower show
from 1 to 8 p.m. both Satur
day and Sunday at the Azalea
school gymnasium. j
From noon to 8 p.m. both
days there will be an exhibit
of the Pelican Bay Art asso-i
ciation in Fern street studio.
From 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. both
days, the Mt. Emily Gem and
Mineral club will conduct an
exhibit in the Veterans of For
eign Wars hall.
On Saturday from 8 p.m.
to midnight, a square dance j
jamboree will be held in the '
high school gym. Square danc
era from 70 clubs from Ore-'
gon and northern California
have been invited.
The Sunday program in
cludes church services at 11
a.m., when a community wor
ship service will be conduct
ed. The annual beef barbecue
will be served at 12:30 p.m.
and at 3 p.m. a Sunday con
cert is scheduled. All three
events will be held in Azalea
State park.
District Judge and Mrs.
Sam Hall and Curry County
Judge and Mrs. Fernley Long
will assist in serving the bar
becue. Queen for the festival will
be Miss Elaine Nonemaker,
17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Nonemaker of Harbor.
Cherry Fruit Fly
Appears in Valley
The cherry fruit ' fly has
emerged in the valley and
growers should spray within
aeven days or by May 25, ac
cording to County Agent Don
Berry.
The chemicals Methoxy
chlor or Diazinon should be
used in the amounts recom
mended by the county exten
sion service. If growers do
not spray in seven days the
fly will deposit its eggs with
in the fruit, Berry said.
The extension service has
installed an ultra-violet light
trap at the old experiment
station near Talent to trap
the peach twig borer and oth
er moths. The trap was pro- j
vided by the state department !
of agriculture, and all trap
ped specimens are sent to the !
state department of agricul- i
ture. i
The light attracts the in
sects, they hit a baffle and
fall into a funnel attached to
a cyanide jar. So far the light
has attracted only tiger and
cutworm moths, Berry said, j
When the trap was first

said the Talent police and
county dog catcher located
adjacent to the old experiment
station received quite a few
calls. The weird purple glow
attracted the attention of pass-:
ing motorists, he said.
The first pear drop came
last week, Berry noted. This
is normal, he said, and the
pear crop still appears to be
a good one, according to ear
ly indications.

Young Mothers Win!
Regulation Change
' Yreka - A group of young
mothers Thursday night won
a change in regulations gov
erning swimming instruction
for children at the new mu
nicipal pool here.
The mothers complained to
the Yreka city council when
they discovered earlier in the
week that only children from
the third grade up would be
accepted for swimming in
struction. After listening to the moth
ers' complaints, councilmcn
voted to lower the require
ment to include children of
any age who are at least 48
inches in height.
In other action, the coun
cil introduced a dog leash or
dinance, providing for keep
ing all dogs off the streets.
Owners whose dogs are picked
Up and impounded will pay a
fine of at least $5.75.
The resignation of Sgt. Lou
Price, rekas unofficial as

cepted by thu council. Richard
Humiston, a member of the
city force for nine years, was
moved up to take his place,
