On the Air
By ELEANOR WIESE
In Cortile Cascino, a youth's
best chance for success lies
in becoming an organization
man. The organization in this
case is the Mafia.
Cortile Cascino, the worst
slum in Palermo, Sicily, is
the setting for "NBC White
Paper No. 12 The Inferno,"
to be broadcast Friday at 8:30
p.m. on KMED-TV. Chet Hunt
ley is narrator.
"The Mafia rules by force,
and force is the only author
ity the people of this squalor
ridden area understand," says
Robert Young, who. with Mi
chael Roemer, directed and
filmed the program in Paler
mo. "Many boys in Cortile
Cascino hope to join the Ma
fia when they become older
because membership in this
society represents their only
opportunity to achieve some
sort of respectability and com
mand respect."
When there is lawlessness,
the Mafia takes over, provid
ing order in a feudal way but
demanding a price for its serv
ices, a price sometimes paid
in human lives. The television
program includes scenes of a
recent wave of Mafia mur
ders.
"The Inferno" is a portrait
of a living hell," according to
executive producer Irving Gil
lin. "We are directing atten
tion to the disinherited, the
abandoned of the earth, for
whom life is a never-ending
struggle for survival."
