its unwelcome passengers any
longer.
Science has come to the
aid of the dog by making
it incuy lougn tor tne ileas.
Because many dogs do have
fleas, it was only natural that
some Interested persons
would attempt to estimate
how many fleas would be
comfortable, or be resident in
the hair of a dog.
Not entirely satisfied with
an estimate, some folks de
vised a cleanine Drocram on
a flea-ridden doe. and

It was found, too, that there
were varying degress of toler
ance In different dogs - that
is, how many were necessary
before the dog began tn
scratch himself. This depend-
cd on the individual dog's
personality. Some dogs could
entertain more fleas than
other dogs. Some dogs, like
some people, blow their tops
sooner than others under the
same stimuli.
The long-haired dogs, the
shepherd and the collie, could
harbor as many as 1,000 fleas
while the short-haired ones
usually played host to a cou
pie of hundred. Of course,
a large dog could accomodate
more than could a small dog.
Early in the investigation
it was discovered that the
"yellow dog" didn't necessar
ily have more fleas than a
black and white one. Science
now knows this, and the dog
should know It. But so far,
no one has informed the fleas,
The flea Is cleverly fitted
to live in the hair of a dog,
being n a r r o w-bodied and
equipped with long, strong
legs, perfectly adapted to
crawling in and between
close- growing hairs.
The adult flea pierces the
hide of the dog and drinks
its fill of blood; it is the only
food the little monsters ever
eat. The female flea may lay
her eggs in the dog's hair,
but they fall nut onto the
floor, the rug or the davenport.
They hatch In a disgust
ingly short time. The larvae
live on dust, if you can imag
ine such a diet, but they de
rive enough organic matter
to subsist.
The very young fleas can
coast along for weeks, with
out a mouthful of food, and
remain dormant. A sudden
vibration can wake them up,
and start them nn a hunt for
a ring of any color.
Various methods have been
tried to rid the family dog
of fleas. Now it looks like
solution has been found.
The veterinarian can admin
