Flame Going Out Under Oregon's Political Pot as Election Day Approaches
United Press International
Campaigning for Friday's
Oregon primary ends today as
Oretn Democrats and Re
public's prepared to pick
their November candidates In
an election which hag sparked
heated interest in only a few
cases.
Sen. Wayne Morse, seeking
his fourth term, is running for
the second time as a Demo
crat since he bolted the Re
publican party in 1952. It will
be the first test of Morse's
voting strength since he lost
the 1960 Oregon presidential
primary to President Ken
nedy. But his real test, should he
win nomination Friday, will
come in November. Morse is
opposed in the primary by
Charles Gilbert, a Portland
labor union member.
Republican Senate candi
date R. F. Cook, Scotts Mills,
today sent telegram to
Morse congratulating Morse
"upon your reelec'in i
United States Senator."
Cook said Morsiffis assured
of reelection in November be
cause it appears that the GOP
nomination for U. S. Senator
in tomorrow's primary will be
a Republican other than him
self whom Morse will defeat
in the fall.
Cook complained of Oregon
newspaper endorsements of
Sig Unander, Portland, and
Edwin R. Durno, Medford.
In the telegram to Washing
ton, D. C, Cook told Morse:
"It would be interesting to
know what particular mes
merism your forces employed
upon Oregon editors to cause
them to pursue a course
which can only lead the Re
publican party lo new heights
of defeat."
He specifically objected to
the endorsement of Unander
by the Oregonian.
Gov. Mark Hatfield, who
has opposition from George
Altvater of Portland, ha?done
little campaigning in his bid
for nomination for a second
term. State Sen. Walter Pear
son and Atty. Gen. Robert Y.
Thornton seek the Democratic
nomination for governor,
along with Dan Cox of Spring
field and M. A. Yenge of Eu
gene. The Thornton-Pearson bat
tle, the six-way race for the
Republican Senate nomination
and the fight for the Demo
cratic nomination for Con
gress in the fourth district
have had the most fireworks.
AH six candidates for the
GOP Senate bid have been
critical of Morse, who was
elected as a Republican in
1944 and 1950. GOP voters
will choose among Unander,
Durno, Dr. Harold Livingston,
Jim Bacaloff, Cook and Glenn
Brixey. Both Durno, wno has
been in ihe state for three
weeks, and Unander, have hit
hard at Kennedy Administra
tion policies.
Much of the hottest battling
in the late stages has been
between ex - Congressman
Charles O. Porter and House
Speaker Robert Duncan, two
of four candidates for the
Democratic congre nional
nomination in the fourth dis
trict. State Sen. Robert Straub
and Eugene Fireman Patrick
Flynn round out the four-man
race to oppose State Rep. Carl
Fisher (R - Eugene), unop
posed on the GOP ticket.
Rep. Walter Norblad is un
opposed for nomination in the
first district. Willis West, a
Multnomah county deputy dis
trict attorney, and Blaine
Whipple, former executive
secretary of the Democratic
party, seek the bid to oppose
him.
In Eastern Oregon, Rep. Al
Ullman is unopposed for nomi
nation on the Democratic side.
Bend Publisher Robert Chan
dler, a surprise entry on the
GOP ticket, Is opposed for
nomination to Congress by
Everett Thoren of Elgin.
Rep. Edith Green (D-Ore.)
has primary opposition from
Mrs. Audrey Henry, a con
servative, and druggist How
ard Steinbach. Republicans
seeking the third district
nomination are Stanley E.
Hartman, Steinbach's drug
store .business partner, and
Wint Blackwell.
Voters also will choose be
tween Circuit Judges Arno
Denecke of Portland and Lyle
Wolff of Baker for a Supreme
Court position; between Peter
Gunnar, incumbent, and Ray-
Market Closes Substantially Lower
mond Jones for tax court
judge; decide on two measures
and nominate candidates for
the State Souse and Senate
and fcbor commissioner.
One of the measures would
let legislators set their own
salaries; the other would
make it easier for new taxing
districts to set up their initial
tax base.
Pat Blair is unopposed for
the GOP nomination for lstoor
commissioner. Democratic in
cumbent Norman Nilsen has
opposition from Vic Davis.
Nominations will be made
for 13 Senate seats and all 60
House seats.
Numerous local issues such
as fluoridation in Prineville,
authority for city-owned buses
in Portland and charter elec
tions In Sherman, Jackson and
Benton counties have added
interest to the elecetion.
