To Locate Fish,
Aid Hatcheries

About' 70 planes are being
used to turn up concentrations
ot fish and lead fishing fleets
to them, according to the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife service.
James L. Squire Jr., former
director of the North Atlantic
Exploratory Fishing base at
Gloucester, Mass., said plane
spotting has been so success
ful that it probablj would be
expanded substantially, with
helicopters ultimately replac

used.
He said use of aircraft to
find fish had greatly reduced
the search time of the fishing
vessels. Besides the time f.

age of being able to observe

ment of more reliable engines
and radio equipment.
Planes are being used for
fish spotting in these areas:
Alaska, for salmon: Pacific
west coast, for sardine, mack'
ercl, bonlto, sea bass, barra
cuda, anchovy and tuna; Gulf
of Mexico, for menhaden.
Maine sardine, bluejack her
ring, swordflsh and bluefin
tuna.
Maine herring usually may
he spotted from the air at
dusk when they rise from the
bottom and migrate toward
inshore areas.

practice in California for the
past five years," Squire said.
"Night-and-day operations
ranging 125 miles or more in
to the offshore areas are con
ducted, using single-engine
light aircraft. Such planes
used primarily for tuna spot
ting are capable of flights of

Most of the airplanes are
equipped with wheels and
can be operated only from
land airports. But crafl equip
ped with pontoons are com
monly found in the Gulf of
Mexico menhaden fishery and
the main herring fishery.

The students figured they
lost a collective total of about
100 pounds In body weight
during the marathon and av
