Sweetland Promotes
Improved Relations
With Indonesians
HI
Smith
the country,
By A. ROBERT SMITH
Mail Tribune Waahington
Correspondent
Washington (Special) - Mon
roe Sweetland, one of Ore
gon's leading political parti
sans of the
past decade,
has plunged
into the green
'j pastures
of non parti-
'i sanship on a
national scale.
After months
of journeying
back and
forth about
Sweetland has
organized the Indonesian-
American Society of the Unit
ed States, a group dedicated
to promoting better relations
between American citizens
and those of Indonesia. The
Milwaukie publisher has been
named executive director.
task which seems destined to
take him out of Democratic
politics for an indefinite
period.
Honorary Chairman of the
society is Dr. Frank P. Gra
ham, former senator from
North Carolina, now a United
Nations official, who is the
most highly regarded Ameri
can In Indonesia. Graham
served as mediator between
the Indonesian nationalists
and the Dutch colonialists 12
years ago, with the result that
Indonesia became a free and
independent country.
Became Concerned
Sweetland became con
cerned about Indonesia, he ex
plained, during a trip around
the world last summer when
he spent several days at the
American embassy, visiting
with the U.S. ambassador,
Howard Jones, in Indonesia.
The ambassador expressed
concern that few Americans
had become aware of the rise
of this important Asia nation
because of the limited con
tacts between them In the
past. He pointed out that In
donesia ranks right behind
the United States in the most
heavily populated nations.
The ranking now is China,
India, Russia, United States,
Indonesia and Japan.
Attorney, General Robert F.
Kennedy devoted about as
much time and attention to
Indonesia (5'4 days) as to Ja
pan during his world tour last
February.
The Indonesian American
Society is designed to serve as
a bridge between the peoples
of both countries. Sweetland
declined to reveal its source
of finances; but the treasurer
is connected with a mining
company, which suggests that
business interests with a vest
ed interest in good relations
with Indonesia have agreed to
underwrite the society.
Sweetland sees Indonesia
one, of the real battle
grounds between democracy
and communism. He was here
in Washington recently pro
moting more interest among
otnciais in the problems of
this faraway land.
Russia has been trying to
promote a shooting war be
tween Indonesia and the
Dutch over the territory of
West New Guinea, and the
Soviets have been providing
military hardware.
Seeks Peaceful Settlement 1
The United States has been
working for a peaceful settle
ment, along lines leading to
an orderly transition of West
New Guinea from Dutch to
Indonesian control in about
two years. . . .
The new society can't settle
territorial issues. It is a good
will organization which hopes
to loster greater awareness in
the United States of the im
portance of this foreign land
and its peoples. It hopes to
stimulate tourism, trade and
other personal contacts, such
as student exchanges.
hweetland pointed out that
there are 571 Indonesian stu
dents studying in the United
States this year compared to
only 160 studying in Russia.
In the organization phase of
the last few months, Sweet
land interviewed about 300
persons in the United States
who had some special interest
or background involving In
donesia to secure interest and
support for this project.
Among members of the
board of directors are Eric
Johnston, of Spokane, chair
man of the Motion Picture In
dustry; and Prof. Eugene Bur
dick, the University of Cali
fornia professor who co
authored "The Ugly American."
Terrorists Roam
Streets in Algiers
Algiers, Algeria UPD Eu
ropean and Moslem terrorists
ranged through the streets
and countryside of Algeria
Tuesday, shooting and killing
in a new surge of violence that
police feared might erupt into
large-scale fighting.
In apparent retaliation for
Monday's outburst of Moslem
terrorism, European com
mandos went on a shooting
spree in Algiers.
By 12:30 p.m. local time,
terrorism across the country
had killed 23 persons at least
IS of them Moslems, and
wounded 12, bringing the
year's unofficial casualty toll
to 4.602 dead am 8,611
wounded.
