WHAT IS THI ORAL VACCINE?
It is a live virus voeclne, taken by mouth, which hos been modified (weakened)
for the purpose of producing Immunity without producing clinical illness. (It is
like smallpox vaccine which Is also a live vaccine.)
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SABIN ORAL VACCINE
AND THE SALK VACCINE?
The Salk vaccine Is produced from a dead virus and the three types are com
bined. Four shots are usually given over a period of seven months. With Sabin
oral vaccine, each type Is given separately by mouth, four to six weeks apart.
Immunity usually results within a week. Thus, greater immunity can be
acquired more quickly against Types I, II and III of the polio viruses.
HOW SAFE IS THE SABIN ORAL VACCINE?
The vaccine has been given to mere than 70 million people in Russia, Mexico,
Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia with excellent reports of results. As of the end
of March, 1962, 4,229,464 doses have been given in the United States so far,
with complete safety.
HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE SABIN ORAl VACCINE?
Because the oral vaccine usually produces an Intestinal barrier against Infec
tion, It is expected that the vaccine will be more effective than any presently
available by breaking the chain of transmission, or eliminating the vaccinated
person as carrier, which killed vaccine does not do.
SHOULD YOU HAVE ORAL VACCINE IF YOU HAVE
ALREADY HAD SALK VACCINE?
Yes, it is wise to take the oral vaccine. It will increase your own protection
and help you protect other persons in the community.

A dose of vaccine can be mixed with distilled water and taken by cup; spoon
. fed to Infants or put on sugar er candy for children.
WHO MAY GET THE ORAL VACCINE?
The vaccine may be given to persons of all ages. It li safe for newborn infants
but It may be necessary to give a boaster dose at about one year of age to - -Infants
who received their first dose under the age of six weeks. In this mass
Immunization program, vaccine will be given to babies from three months of
age and up.
WHAT ARE THE RECOMMENDED DOSES?
For children of three months of age and adults, 'the recommended dose Is three
drops of the diluted vaccine. (300,000 TCID50-J0k tissue culture Infection

ARE THERE ANY REACTIONS FROM THI ORAL VACCINE?
' No, oil studies have demonstrated the ebsolute safety of the oral vaccine and
no side reactions of any nature have been demonstrated to be caused by the
vaccine. v ,
' ARE THERE ANY CONTRA-INDICATIONS?
The vaccine should not be given to acutely III persons with a tompertttur of
102 or ever. It Is recommended not to give It to persons who have had an .
adenectomy or tonsllectomy within two weeks prior to the vaccine, and not
to perform such operations two weeks after the vaccine is given. Chronic
diseases, agammaglobulinemia, inoculations of smallpox vaccine, DPT, pre
maturity and pregnancy ore not considered contra-lndleatlons. Treatment with
' corticosteroids Is not a centra-Indication. Persons allergic te penicillin or to eggs
may safely take oral polio vaccine.

The vaccine will be distributed from six public schools throughout the Jackson
County area.
