For Valley Picnic
Applegate Valley - Final
plans for the old time picnic
and get acquainted day for
new and old valley residents
were completed at a commit
tee meeting held at Ruch
Community church Sunday.
Mrs. Harley Hall presided in
the absence of Mrs. W. D.
Pearson, chairman of the pic
nic. The event will be held on
Memorial Day in the grove at
Ruch school from 11 to 4 p.m.
with serving to start at noon.
William Barker will be asked
to be master of ceremonies.
Horseshoes, baseball, and
other games will be provided,
and in case of rain indoor rec-
reation is planned in the
school gym. Everyone will
bring a picnic basket, and
baked beans and beverages
will be furnished.
All valley organizations are
sponsoring the picnic, includ
inc churches, grange, exten
sion units, PTA groups, square
dance groups, garden club,
farm bureau, and stockmen's
association.
Cemetery Clean-Up

the lodge which is located 24
miles from Medford on the
Crater Lake Highway, near
Trail.
Elrod was elected president
during a recent dinner meet
ing at the lodge when other
officers for the year also were
elected. They are Dan Aberge,
vice president; Don Harmon,
secretary-treasurer, and Art
Tropple, tail twister.
The new board of directors
is made up of Patrick O'Neal,
Ray Chubb, and Kermlt Sur
geon, In addition to their sight
conservation and eye glass
project, the club assists in
youth activities and commun
ity projects.

gram May 6. Musicians from

Point and Shady Cove were
heard. An ensemble consist

and organ, Mrs. Genevieve

held a Pre-School Clinic at
Butle Falls high school recent
ly. Dr. A. E. Merkel was In
attendance. Mrs. Shirley Al
lan, health nurse for the Butte
Falls area, was also present.
Thirteen children received
physical exams. Thirty-three
children attended the clinic
with the majority receiving
immunizations.

ton, Mis. Robert Driskell, Mrs.
Don Jolliffe and Mrs. William
Edmondson. Mrs. Edmondson
is health chairman for the

Table Rock - We attended the meeting o( regional
M.T. correspondents at Sambo's Wednesday. As usual
most of those present were ladies. However, counting
myself, there were two men, one a bright, cheerful young
fellow, from the Trail Creek area, who came here re
cently from California, where he wrote for some of the
large newspapers. Bob Vroman, the M.T. photographer,
demonstrated the way to use a camera for getting best
results in picture taking. Several ladies present had
cameras and one took a shot at us thinking she had got
me wearing a white shirt, but our better half says it
was only a faded out blue shirt. We got to see close up
Olive Starcher, of Potpourri fame, and listened to a
vigorous, well-delivered talk on how to get and write
society news. She emphasized to be careful about using
names correctly, and in the right place. Also we were
cautioned about abbreviating, which we do a lot of to
save time and space. According to her, rather than say
J.F.K., President of the U.S.A., we should say, Mr. John
Fitzgerald Kennedy, President of the United States of
America.
Farm Plan Criticism
We are hearing a lot of criticism about the new farm
plan, some going so far as to say they will keep on until
they get all the farmers in jail. We don't need to worry
about farmers getting into jail; they are not that lucky.
We haven't been in the local jail for some time, but
according to our Oklahoma friend the boarders there
are eating high on the hog, with a daily ration of well
cooked, tasty food, roast turkey, cranberry sauce, and
all the fixings. On holidays a television set to gaze at,
and see what the F.B.I, might be doing, free laundry,
and other benefits.- According to our friend, we Ore
goniana are miles behind in the handling of law break
era. Where he came from he says they have a large
farm where the prisoners are taken each day to do the
various jobs on a producing farm. We asked if they had
any trouble in keeping the men at work, he replied,
"No, the foreman in charge has a long blacksnake, and
when he sees a man shirking on the job. he begins to
uncoil the blacksnake, which causes the shirker to 'rat
tle his hocks,' and get going."
The local Ladies Club met Wednesday, May 9, at the
home of Mrs. Ernest Smith. Besides the local members,
several past members, now living in other parts of the
valley were present Including Mrs. Florence Brenne
sholtz, Mrs. O. T. Wilson, Mrs. Lloyd Hamlin, and Mrs.
Francis Vanderpool.
Mrs. Dana W. Bowers, of 48 North Rose ave., Med
ford, would like to communicate with anyone who
might know the whereabouts of Mr. Willey, a former
resident of the Antioch district. He owned a farm not
far from the Antioch cemetery, part of which was taken
by the army during World War II. Mr. Willey, and Mrs.
Bowers grew up in the same area in the Slate of New
Hampshire.

"Success of the neighborohood beautification pro
gram, conducted by the people of the Table Rock dis
trict last year was so apparent that the community club
has decided to continue the contest this year.
"Three prizes will be given, one for the mailbox
with the most attractive year-around shrub growing by
it, one to the mailbox with the best flowers around it,
and one prize to the farmhouse with the best looking
frontage.
"Mrs. Mary Myers and Miss Dorothy Hunsley were
prize winners last year. A committee of three, composed
nf R. E, Nealon, Grace Lydiard and Mrs. Elmer Kyle,
will manage the contest.
"Since cattle running in the public roads tear down
and destroy flowers and shrubs, the community club will
put on a campaign for strict enforcement of the herd
laws. Anyone seeing cattle running at large is urged to
contact one of the committee members.
"The county court and district attorney's office have
agreed to cooperate with the community club."
Compared to conditions along our road today, we
wonder if our community is slipping. Instead of flowers
and shrubs, our roadsides are strewn with beer cans,
bottles, and empty cigarette packages.
This thought for the day was taken from one of Bob
Ruhl's editorials just before an election day. "When in
doubt, vote, no."

Decides Against
Sandblasting Tank
Phoenix - The city council
Monday night decided the
water tank on the fire truck
didn't need sanblasting, but
ordered that a chemical used
by other fire departments be
used to prevent rust.
Fire Chief Dave Haggard
was not present as he had
been called to San Francisco
by the illness of his father.

point average for the fifth six
weeks just completed at the
Butte Falls high school.

Sgt. Scarborough was sta

for close to two months, then

For Hospital Home
Happy Camp - The Happy
Camp Citizens Hospital com
mittee is now in the process
of making a local drive for
funds to erect a building to
house an emergency hospital
for use in this area.
The cost of the building in
round figures is predicted to
be $1,000. This building is to
be set up on county owned
ground near the airport.
In a letter sent out by the
chairman, Frank Looten, he
states: "If every one in the
Happy Camp area would in
vest two dollars or more each
to be used for the construc
tion of this building, the
Civil Defense and the Siskiyou
County Supervisors, under the
auspices of the Federal Gov
ernment will donate a $40,000
emergency field hospital fully
equipped to administer mass
medical aid with utmost effi
ciency." It was stated in a recent
public meeting here that in
case of any disaster, fire, floor,
attack, or accident where
many persons were hurt seri
ously, that medical supplies
here would be depleted almost
immediately.
The emergency hospital
would consist of 200 beds and
bedding, one x-ray unit, one
large and one small generator
to be used in case of power
failure, bandages, plasma,
surgical instruments and the
equipment necessary to oper
ate a field hospital,
Old-Timers' Dinner
Montague - An old-timers'
pot-luck dinner honoring all
residents 75 and over will be
held Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at
the Entertainment hall in
Montague. The occasion is in
observance of the 75th an
niversary of Montague.
Each family attending is
asked to bring their own table
service and food. Anyone

be available to carry them out, For the past 12 years this YMCA auction has
been a yearly event to raise money to help prpvide and maintain the neces
sary equipment to corry on -these activities.
The past year it required $3? per child to provide the programs that were
' available and of this amount each child contributed $12 a year in the form
of dues. However, no child is denied membership for lock of funds. It is neces
sary therefore to some way obtain funds to moke up the difference. The United
Crusade provides the primary source of funds lo moke up this difference. The
YMCA auction supplements the operating budget -and the monies derived
therefrom ore directed specifically to provide the purchase and maintenance
of equipment.
Because of the important port the YMCA ploys in the life of the com
munity. It was a pleasure to serve as your YMCA auction chairman.

ning the Yreka Rotary Club
Annual Scholarship.
Also among the "Top 100"
students was Miss Ann Rut
ledge, a senior at Yreka high,
and daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
W. A. Rutledge of Hornbrook.
Top students from the 7th
and 8th grades of elementary
schools throughout the Yreka
High school attendance area
of Siskiyou county also were
recognized at the dinner and
certificates of merit awarded
them.
Those from Hornbrook re
ceiving certificates were Bob
by Hutchins, Cheryl Yeager,
and Larry Michels. Awards
are made on the basis of high I
scholastic marks and partici
pation in school activities.

ner from here were Mr. and
Mrs. John MacKinnon,' Mr,
and Mrs. George Michels, and
Mrs. Alberta Hutchins. Prin
cipal Dean Price of the local
elementary school also was
present.
Larry Michels is the Med
ford Mail Tribune carrier for
Hornbrook. The event was
sponsored by the Yreka and
Montague Rotary clubs.
