Expected To Show
Gradual Decline
Washington - (UPD - The Ag
riculture Department lays
cattle prices, now near their
high for the year, likely will
decline gradually for the next
two months. They are not ex
pected to break as sharply as
they did a year ago.
In a review of the livestock
and meat situation, the depart
ment said hog prices probably
will show some improvement
starting in late May, and are
expected to work closer to
vear-earlier levels by July 1
The spring lamb marketing
season will be in full swing
by mid-May with prices sig
nificantly above last year.
Decline Expected
Prices of all livestock are
expected to decline seasonally
the last half of this year, the
department said; Lamb prices
likely will continue above last
year's prices throughout the
remainder of the year. Hog
prices are expected to hold
near last year's level through
the summer, but , will drop
somewhat below year ago
prices in the fall. Beef cattle
prices probably will drop be
low year ago levels at the
peak of the fall marketing
season In October and Novem
ber. - Red meat production In the
first three months of 1962 was
up 4 per cent over the pro
duction in the same period a
year ago. Pork production was
up 5 per cent; beef was up
per cent; lamb and mutton
production was unchanged;
but veal production was down
4 per cent. Domestic meat pro
duction was supplemented by
large imports of meat during
the first quarter compared
with a year ago. The increase
In Imports was mainly in pro
cessing beef and mutton. . . .
Storage Holdings Up
Cold storage holdings of
meats at the end of the quarter
were up somewhat from a year
ago. The bulk of the increased
production and imports were
)nto domestic consumption, re
sulting in an increase in per
capita consumption of meat
over a year ago.
Beef production during the
1 second quarter of this year is
expected to be about equal to
first quarter production but
down 4 per cent from a year
go. Pork production will de
crease seasonally from April
through June but will remain
above a year ago. Lamb and
mutton production, however,
will not only be down season
ally from the first quarter but
will be down sharply from the
nign level ol production main
tained during the second quar
ter jast year.
