Closely Resembles Senator Careers

Six." As I was
glancing
thro ugh the
booklet, I was
struck by a
curious com'
parison. I kept thinking how
closely the first six years of
a child parallels the first six
year term of a U.S. senator.
The pre-school child, says
the booklet, "feels to a large
extent that he is the center
of the universe and that he
controls a lot more things
than he really does."
Now I ask you, have you
ever seen a more trenchant
description of a senator?
In fact, the entire develop
ment of the two groups is
amazingly similar, if you
don't count such things as
"potty training" and "thumb
sucking.'
Suggests Substitution
Take, for instance, the sec
tion on speech. I have copied
some excerpts from It below.
If you substitute the word
"senator" in the appreciate
places, you will see what I
mean.
"From the beginning he
use his voice by pitch and
intensity changes, by crying,
chuckling, or fearfully shriek
ing to tell you how he
feels . , .
"He seems to converse with
characteristic pauses and in
flections, although the indi
vidual sounds are meaning
less ... He is apt to overdo
the power of words for a time
. . . Slowly he gains the abil
ity to express his desires in
more detail . . .
"Learning to use pronouns
correctly comes somewhat la
ter because ... he has a self
centered view of the world.
He still feels that he is the
only 'me' that counts . . ."
HAS NO SUCH PLAN

was surprised when police
men joined him on the hotel
roof and asked where the man
was who was reported peering
over the roof getting ready to
jump. Allen explained that he
was only peering over the
roof to find a place for an
antenna for a guest's tele
vision set.
His first three years, the
booklet tells us, are charac
terized by "his fierce desire
to manage everything ... He
is complicating life by want
ing to run everything him
self." During his fourth year, he
still has an "imperfect sense
of what, and who, causes
what." He "scarcely can dis
tinguish between what he has
done, and what he has imag
ined or wished he could."
The fifth year is a sort of
milestone in the development
pattern, although "he's far
from mature in many re
spects." He may "press be
yond his enduranee," "go
overboard on rules'' and
"tend to check on others in a
bossy fashion."
The booklet is tilled with
advice to parents, much of
which can be applied to vot
ers who are bringing up a
senator.
You can take comfort from
knowing that "some of the
annoying baffling behavior"
is just a stage and "won't nec
essarily be happening next
year."
You also should bear in
mind that some of it stems
from his fear that you will
"let someone else take his
place."
A. Robert Smith's Book Target' of Morse Denunciation .

Wayne Morse (D Ore.) has
lashed out in the Senate at a
book about him which he de
clared was "character assas
sination." Morse told the Senate that
the book bf A. Robert Smith,
a correspondent for several
Oregon newspapers, was "full
of un-truths, half-truths, out
of-context distortions and oft
repeated Republican misrepre
sentations." The book, entitled "The Tig
er in the Senate," is to be
published late this month but
advance copies have been cir
culated among Morse's Senate
colleagues.
SOC Catalogs for New Year Published
Ashland - Southern Oregon
college regular catalogs for
the academic year 1962 63 are
now printed and ready for dis
tribution, Hugh G. Simpson,
director of information, has
announced.
According to Simpson, who
edits the catalog, the current
issue reflects the growth of
the college in terms of in
creased course offerings at
lower division, upper division,
and graduate levels.
He pointed out that in the
years since 1946 when Dr.

the divisional and departmen
tal offerings, is a 3-year pre
professional program in physi
cal therapy in cooperation
with the Children's Hospital
of Los Angeles.

Sen. Hubert Humphrey (D-
Minn.) rose with a smile after
Morse's angry denunciation
and said he could at least
vouch for the accuracy of the
title. "Like a tiger, Morse dis
plays courage, tenacity, per
severance and strength," he
said.
Sen. Kenneth B. Keating (R
N Y.) also smiling, told Morse
that he had not yet read the
book, but that the title had
given him the impression that
it was campaign1 literature for
Morse, not against him.
Morse said Smith was the
correspondent for "several
anti-Morse newspapers," and
that his book contained "mis
statements and slanted jour
nalism.
"The fact that the book's
publishers did not submit the
manuscript to me in advance
of publication so that I could
have pointed out to them its
misstatements and slanted
journalism is indicative of the
political purposes of the
book," Morse said in a state
ment. "I realize that I am fair
game for my political enemies
in the forthcoming campaign
and this book is their first
attack," he said. "There will
be others."
The book, being published
by Doubleday & Co., is sched
uled for appe.aance May 25.
Smith, who has covered
Washington for about 10
years, is a correspondent for
the Portland Oregonian, Eu
gene Register-Guard, Oregon
Statesman, Pendleton East
Oregonian and the Medford
Mail Trbiune.
Career Traced
The book traces Morse's
rise from an obscure law pro
fessor in Oregon to the Sen
ate, including his switch from
the Republican ranks to the
Democratic party, and his
lone-wolf battles in the Sen
ate. Smith, commenting on
Morse's charge, said he would
prefer to let the book stand
on its own merits and to let
readers decide as to its fair
ness. He denied any political
implications in the work.
"My book is non - partisan
but nof without criticism," he
said.
Smith said Doubleday'j
editors had "refused Sen.
Morse's request to censor the
book" in advance of publica
tion. "Sen. Morse knows that I
have given him far mors
credit for valuable service
than any of his political
enemies ever will," he de
clared. "The readers will de
cide who is being fair."
