Vanish From Map;
Sealed Own Doom

way to gunnery practice, old
Wendover Air Base waits
quietly now to vanish from
the maps of the white-flecked
Utah desert.
It has a busy, proud history
fmm a war which some Amer
icans already find it hard to
remember. The coming of the
atomic bomb made the squad
mni nf B17s. B20s and Liber
ators that came to Wendover
antique by the standards ol
modern warfare.
Wendover, in a way, sealed
1U own doom at the same time
It was instrumental in win
ninff the Pacific war In 1945.
On its black-topped runway
one day landed a big Oiv
which came to be called the
"Enola Gay." And to the war
painted bomber came a spe
cial crew. Over the salt flats
and the brownish miles of the
desert they trained to drop
one bomb.
The crew did its Job over
the heart of the Japanese
manufacturing heartland in
1945 and speeded the end of
a long war. The plane never
rum hack to Wendover, and
it wasn't long after the war
ended that Wendover Air
Base was deactivated.
At the end of 1961 the Pen
tagon decided Wendover was
of no further use to the mili
tary and turned over to the
General Secrvice Administra
tion for disposal.
In the hectic early days of
Wnrirf War II Wendover fill
ed a less spectacular, but
especially important use. ine
crews of the heavy bombers
formed in the Second Air
Force came there in 1942,
1943 and 1944 to train. They
took their four-engined giants
-Liberators and B17s first,
later B29s-out into the waste
land and dropped sand-and-black
powder bombs. In six
weeks they were ready for
the hop to the European or
Pacific theaters.
The bombing range at its
height took in several mil
lion acres where not a human
being or animal was permit
ted without Army authoriza
tion. When the age of rockets
dawned Wendover's vast
miles of arid land was long
discussed as a test site and
some tests actually were
made. But it never nas w
rnmp Imoortant for that use
Where there is grass growing
the range has been leased to
sheep owners.
National Guard let fishier
many of them manned by
pilots who fought in the Ko
rean War, still streak high
over the almost-deserted air
field in the summer for rock
et and gunnery practice. Ex
cept for that, the great hang
ars, wooden barracks and ra
dio towers ane useless. Some
already have been sold and
hauled away.
Wendover Air Base, where
atomic energy as a weapon
found its way into military
training, Is on its way to extinction.
Johnson at Fair
After Dedication
Seattle -IUPIU Vice President
Lyndon Johnson arrived here
Wednesday night for a tour of
the world's fair.
Johnson came from Eustern
Washington where he deliv
ered an address during dedi
cation of the Ice Harbor dnm
on the Snake river, 12 miles
east of Pasco.
The vice president called
the $122 million spent on the
project "a wise investment."
He then touched a button
that set in motion a 90,000
kilowatt generator at the
dam, first of four on the lower
Snake river dt'signed eventu
ally to add nearly three mil
lion kilowatts of power to the
Northwest pool.
The generator is one of
three In the initial installa
tion. Three more will be add
ed later, bringing the dam's
power -producing capacity to
550.000 kilowatts.
Located about 10 miles up
stream from the mouth of the
Snake river, the 100-foot high
dam has a navigation lock de
signed to carry barge traffic
up the Snake.
