Many men knew George
Eichnor, 67, when he died
here recently. He was first ad
mitted here in 1949, and
thereafter, was in and out,
Chaplain John Frazee said.
He was last admitted to
the domiciliary,- March 20,
1962. He died April 17, 1962.
He served in the Navy dur
ing World War I, as a ma
chinist mate first class.
William Cuddy, the new ed
itor of Dominews, wrote the
following, which was- read at
the funeral by Chaplain Fra
zee: Welcomed Back
"Walt Grow, who writes Sec
lion 5 for the Dominews had
just written a paragraph wel
coming George Eichnor back
to our Domiciliary which he
had left often and loved so
well when George passed
away. There was not enough
time to write much of an
Obituary for George for the
May issue of Dominews as
the deadline was passed.
"But there is nn deadline
now for George no dead
line in this chapel ever.
"And so we now remember
George Eichnor as one of the
early editors of the Dominews
who was particularly active
In this domiciliary in the
years around 1953. A journ
alist writing an obituary for
George Eichnor could truth
fully say that he vas much
more than an editor he
was one of the ablest publi
cists for his station newspaper
and all of his staff that ever
honored the Veterans Admin
istrate ...
Pride In Work
"He look such just pride
in his editorial work and in
the literary efforts of such
Domiciliary writers as Sid
Hollingsworlh and Don Cir
kot that he rushe4 copies to
world celebrities 11 over the
country who were particular
ly friendly to veterans and
personally anxious about their
domicile and comfort and
care. And he received many
friendly tributes on his work
from such diversified world
celebrities as Edgar A. Guest,
justly celebrated syndicate
poet of the Detroit Free Press
and Rocky Marciano, world
ring champion and many,
many others.
"In simple words, like he
roic veterans on many anoth
er field. George Eichnor's edi
torial work went far beyond
the call to duty.
"He not only edited one of
the most excellent of all Vet
erans Administration newspa
pers but militantly insisted
that tile world know of it and
of the comfortable excellence
of this Domiciliary which was
then known as Camp White.
Second Commandment
"The second great Com
mandment is that 'Thou shall
love thy neighbor as thyself.'
And this admonae George
carried out throughout all his
journalistic life for he liked
nothing better than to write
friendly and excellent report
orial little character sketches
of other members and then
sign his name to the columns
of them.
"He was a champion at
kind words and as there
is no longer any deadline that
George has to make we
found ample time for this
eulogy for George and may
all the good words that he
wrote in his life bring him the
eternal reward that the Spirit
of God givcth to those who
write truthfully and merciful
ly of their fellow man "
Funeral sei vices for George
H. Eichnor were held at the
White City Chapel. Chaplain
John Frazee officiated. Inter-
much of his life as a mining
engineer.
Survivors include one son,
Lt. Col. John T. Eichnor, sta
tioned at 'the Marine base in
Quantico, Va., and one sister,
Mrs. Adelaide Wimmer, Los
Angeles, Calif.
In Washington, Russia'
Gherman Titov and America's
John H. Glin took a whirl
wind tour of the U.S. capital
They joked and lauehed and
I had themselves a very pleas
ant time.
At the Washington monu
ment, which was one of their
first stops, Titov was fascinat
ed by the elevator that takes
visitors to the top. As it start
ed rising, he said to Glenn:
"This is the first joint Soviet
American venture into space.''
Glenn laughed and told his
companion that American
spacemen have their own joke
about the monument - which
looks very much like a rocket
poised for take-off. "We tell
each other," he said to his fel
low astronaut, "that it will
never get off the pad."
Then they both laughed.
ment was in the VA cemetery
at Eagle Point.
Mr. Eichnor, the son of
Dennis C. Eich.ior and Eliz
abeth Rcim, was born at Salt
Lake City, Utah, Dec. 11.
1894. He was a veteran of
World War I, serving from
1917 to 1921. Until recently
he had made his home in
Reno, Nev and had spent
Don Cirkot, who has been
a Junior Section Leader, as
long as there have been Sec
tion Leaders, in Section Two,
has left the domici"'ary serv
ice for an indefinite period.
He hopes to enjoy the fruits
of his labors at home in Reno,
Nev. Don is a writer as well
and the inventor of a "perpit
ual calendar" which he figur
ed out in his spare time.
AS THEY were looking
" through Its glass cover at
the original copy of our Dec
laration of I n d e pendence,
Glenn remarked to Titov:
"The Declaration was signed
in 1776. We're just coming up
to 1976, when it will be 200
years since the Revolution in
this country. As we were
discussing before, you only
make progress as you use
what has gone before. This if
true in all countries."
Titov nodded, and replied-
"During the ages, humanity
accumulates experience."
Question!
If these tvo young men,
national heroes in their two
countries, can get along so
amiably with each other, why
can't their COUNTRIES get
along with each other with
equal amiability?
Ah, me! If we could answer
that question satisfactorily,
we'd be a lot nearer to the
MILLENIUM than we are
now.
HPRIVIA in the news:
- In his column the other
day. Herb Caen cracked:
"Richard Nixon, who spoke
at Town Hall in L.A. the oth
er day, confused his audience
plenty by opening his re
marks with 'It's a great pleas
ure to be with you this eve
ning." A lot of people looked
at their watches and even
shook them, for it was ex
actly 1:30 p.m. But maybe he's
still on Eastern time."
Or
Nixon may have been gun
ning for the mint julep vote.
Down there, it's "Mawnin,
suh," until high noon, and
"Evenin', suh," from then on.
