Belle, the famous Portland
elephant mother, has made
political news.
One of the six candidates
for the Republican nomina
tion for U. S. senator, Dr.
Harold Livingston of Corval
lis, said he was offering the
post of honorary campaign
chairman to Belle. He visited
the Portland Zoo Wednesday
and said, "Belle and I have
much in common. Both of us
like peanuts; in fact, I am
running on peanuts."
Long Wait for EUphants
"Belle and Oregon waited
for a long time for the birth
of Packy," he said. "Our Re
publican elephant too has
waited for a long time to give
birth to a candidate who can
match Sen. Wayne Morse on
the platform as well as iiPi
pulling independent voters in

cial came back from the Ori
ent and committed the, ulti
mate sin for any airline of
ficial. He raved about another car
rier's plane.
"I've never seen an aircraft
cabin interior like it," he mar
veled. "It's got anything In
this country beat a mile."
The airliner In question was
a Convair 8S0 jetliner, oper
ated by Civil Air Transport
(CAT) - the Formosa based
airline founded by the late
Gen. Claire Chennault of Fly
ing Tiger fame.
CAT'S Convair is dubbed
the "Mandarin Jet." And its
unique Interior has impress
ed more people than just the
aforementioned official
The predominant color Is
brushed gold. The seats are a
deep black threaded "with sil
ver and gold. Above the win
dows, splashed in rich colors
of Chinese black, red and pea
cock blue, is a series of mur
als depicting the story of Con
fucius' travels.
There are nine central fig
ures in the procession rang
ing from a two - wheel cart
to flag and pike - carrying
Oriental knights.

The cabin bulkheads are
decorated with authentically-
styled moon-gates, dragons, li
on-knobs and a Chinese Phoe
nix. The jet's exterior is only
slightly less colorful. The big
plane is painted in CAT s tra
ditlonal colors of beige, ail
ver snd gold with a five-toed
Dragon emblazoned on the
front end of the fuselage just
under the cockpit windows. -The
Interior of this flying
Oriental palace is so unusu
al that when the 880 was be
ing built, Convair employees
kept sneaking over to the as
sembly line to see if it was
true.
The "Mandarin Jet" In a
sense has kept faith with
Chennault's dreams, plans and
hopes for the struggling air
line that was born Oct. 25
1046. That was the date
Chennault signed a contract
with the China National Re
lief and Rehabilitation admin
istration for the job of air
lifting food, clothing and med
ical supplies into war-weary
China.
In those days, Chennault's
baby airline was called CNR-
RA Air Transport but was
later reorganized under the
name Civil Air Transport. The
postwar revolution forced
CAT to evacuate 30 bases on
the mainland before reach
ing Taiwan (Formosa) early
in 1950.
Today, CAT is the official
ly-designatcd airline for the
Republic of China, with a pay
roll of 3,000 and serving sev
en countries in the Orient. Its
flight crews are both Amer
ican and Chinese.
Plant Hormone May
Control Blossoming

hormone that can make the
cocklebur bloom out of sea
son and which may be the
trigger for blossoming many
varieties of plants, was de
scribed at the annual meeting
of the American Chemical So
ciety. Dr. Darwin L. Mayfleld, of
Long Beach college, said
availability of the hormone
named florigen may al
low growers to lime produc
tion of plants and prevent
flowering in crops grown sole
ly for their leaves or stalks.
The California scientist' said
the hormone has been con
centrated from an extract of
the cocklebur plant.
The world's motorists wear

al Relations. He is the lone
member of the commission
from Oregon.
Porter Endorsed
Charles O. Porter, another
fourth district Congressional
candidate, said today he had
been endorsed for nomination
by Railway Labor's Political
League. He said hp was noti
fied of the endorsement by H.
C. Crotty, president of the
Brotherhood of Maintenance
of Way Employees.
Democrat Robert Y. Thorn
ton, candidate for governor,
leaves Saturday for a four day
campaign swing into central
and eastern Oregon, he said
today.
Thornton said this will be
the final downstate effort of
his campaign and from now
until the May 18 primary he
will concentrate the campaign
in Multnomah, Clackamas and
Washington counties.

tary of State Dean Rusk has
told Congress it would not
surprise him if Communist
China exploded an atomic
device any time after the next
two years.
In testimony before the
House Foreign Affairs Com
mittee made public Wednes
day, Rusk said he believed
Red China is "working on
missile delivery systems. We
think it will take some time
for them to work those out. I
would - think the schedule
would be somewhat the same
as it would for the bomb."
He said he would be sur
prised if Red China exploded
an atomic weapon "within
one year."
