cal center to be built here
by the H. L. Snyder Memo
rial Research foundation of
Winfield. Snyder, known to
thousands of Kansans as "Dr.
H. L.," practiced medicine
here for nearly four decades
before his death ii 1940.

build .n a 22-acre site a medi
cal center including a clinic
building, a research labora
tory, an additional special re
search building, a dental of
fice building, a diagnostic re
ceiving unit, a home for the
aged and a motel for patients
ani visitors.
Construction is to begin
this summer on the $700,000
medical clinic building, the
foundation said. It reported
that more than $200,000 has
been pledged so far. When
completed, the building will
be leased to a group of Win
field physicians and the in
come will be used to further
research In cancer, mental
health, heart disease, multiple
eclcrosis and allied diseases.

Oklahoma City Now Claims To Be
Largest by Area in United States

city which sprang up on the
prairie in a day now claims
the distinction of being t h e
largest city in the united
States in area, that is.
Through scries of annex
ations over the past three
years, Oklahoma's capital city
has expanded to 483 square
miles. Previously, Los Angeles
held the area title, with 454.9
square miles. By comparison,
New York Cily's five bor
oughs cover 359 4 square
miles.

of 15.6 square miles.
Population growth has been
steady over the years, going
from 204,424 in 1940 to 243,
504 in 1950 and324,253 in the
1960 census.
City leaders began the far-
reaching annexation program
with a master plan three years
ago. The city council has nass-
ed about 285 annexation ordi
nances. Spearheading the job has
been Paul Clowers, director
of the city planning commis
sion, whm is quick to answer
criticism by other areas of the
state about the city's "land
grabbing" practices.
"Ever since World War H
the big cities in our country
have been becoming slowly
encircled by nailer commu
nities," Clowers said.
"Pittsburgh and St. Louis
are good examples. Pittsburgh
has some 130 separate towns
and villages around it and
cannot niove out in any direc
tion. So our plan was, and is,
to provide the space " the
proper expansion of the ciW
in the future, space that wMl
let the city move and grow
like it should."
During the post war explo- j
sion in growth, housing ue

outside the city limits with
improper streets, sewers, wa
ter lines and home construc
tion, Clowers said. Soon, in
