Explained
Ashland-It takes an excep
tional dog to graduate from
the Guide Dogs training
school in San Rafael, Calif.,
according to W. J. Roderick,
bcal director of the program
thet has provided 104 canine
companions for sejhtless per
sons in the past seven years.
Mr. Roderick addressed the
Soroptimist club Friday noon
at its luncheon meeting in the
Mark Antony hotel, telling of
the iijrnous institution and
showing m'ttion pictures of
the four-weeks intensive
course on the San Rafael
campus.
p Most of the dogs which
neve been trained in this area
have been given to 4-H club
members who keep them for
nine months when they are
then ready to meet their new
masters. Each year more than
100 blind persons receive see-ing-eye
dogs at no expense to
them other than transporta
tion to San Rafael. The cost,
averaging $1,800, is borne by
the Guide Dogs for the Blind,
Inc., an organization of per
aons who contribute gener
ously and by individual do
nors. Proof of the success of ihe
program is found in the fact
that 85 per cent of She gradu
ates are gainfully empftyed
and lead normsf? lives in the
