M,L. Ilaren Purcell, a senior
at Crater High school, won
first plaoe in the 17th annual
district Knights of Pythias
lodge speaking contest held
April 25, Don Lacy, speech
director at the high school has
announced. As a result of tak
ing first place. Miss Purcell
will compete June 16 in Port
land against other contestants
from other districts.
The winner of the contest
in Portland will continue to
the regional contest at Spo
kane, Wash., to compete with
entrants from British Colum
bia, Alberta, Saskatchewan,
Montana, Idaho, Wyoming,
Washington and Oregon.
Miss Purcell is a daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Pur
cell, route 2, box S72C, Cen
tral Point. She plans to at-0
tend either Southern Oregon
college or the University of
Oregon, and expects to major
in education or psychology.
Miss Purcell's alternate is
Miss Linda Anthony of
Grants Pass High school.
The Medford chapter of
Knights of Pythias held the
local congest on April 23
when Miss Purcell won first
place and James Schwietert
of Phoenix High school won
second.

said in his new Hobby shop
writing room. He spent 38
years in the Belgian Congo.
The witch doctors and. the
chiefs became part of his life.
The climate, hot, and humid
leaves memories of stark sur
vival. He also remembers
thirst for water. Travel was
mainly by foot and bicycle
from village to village, he
said. On the pleasant side he
remembers sleeping by a
brook.
"But Africa!" h8 id. "It
was wonderful."
White City is not hospital,
but doctors, nurses and an in
firmary are maintained for
members who need limited
medical treatment of short
duration. However, if special
ized treatment is required,
they are transferred to a Vet
erans Administration hospital.
Included in the medical
services are a pharmacy,
dental service, x-ray and clin
ical laboratories, a social work
service, psychology service,

In the field of productive
use of time, the Manual Arts
therapy and Arts and Crafts,
enaterials are provided and
members are assisted in being
taught a.skill. They are busy
at leather work, watch repair,
copper tooling, woodworking,
rug weaving, gem cutting,
tlower making, ceramics, car
tooning, photography, crochet
ing and knitting.
The Hobby shop allows a
member space and facilities to
carry out his own ideas with
material and equipment pur
chased by himself or received
through volunteer donations.
Many useful and artistic arti
cles are produced and fre
quently sold by the members.
A diversified recreat l o n
program is conducted fo all
members that includes partici
pation in adapted sports, club
activities, dramatics, motion
pictures, music, social activi
ties, station newspaper, rtidio
and television.
The White City theater shows
recent cinemascope movies
free of charge to members and
is the scene of card parties,
dances, stage shows and many
fine entertainments provided
by community volunteers. The
VA voluntary service pro
gram, national in scope, is
sponsored at this station by 22
civic and service organiza
tions in Oregon and northern
California, carries on this
much appreciated range of ac
tivities. It provides birthday ;
parties in addition to leading
ward programs and bingo
games in the infirmary where
members also enjoy programs
from the central radio con
trol system, released through
a headphone at each bed.

control function at the North
ern California Service center

of fire control activities for
the 10 Northern Zone Nation
al forests, which include the
Stanislaus, Eldorado, Tahoe,

ath, Shasta-Trinity, Six Riv
ers and Mendocino National
forests.
Activities include coordinat
ed use of air tankers, smoke
lumper, dispatchers, zone fire
tool aftd equipment cache,
warehouse, and training of
fire control personnel.
