of psychoanalysis. It should
be enough.
Jano R.-Hc's coining along,
but he's still scared.
George A.-My sister Jane's
husband had a breakdown last
year and has been undergoing
expensive psychoanalysis ever
since. The only reason I feel
free to butt in is that I'm
chipping in to pay the bills
until Ed gels back his old
earning power, which, by the
way, was very good.
What I'd like to know, and
what no one seems willing to
tell me, is how long does this
thing keep up? It's not that I
begrudge the money. Ed will
be good for it and, besides, he
and Jane would do the same
for me. It's just that Ed seems
okay. He's been holding a
sales job for the past six
months, and I feel the treat
ment may be continuing main
ly because there's still a good
supply of money in the family.

Jane R. - Ed's psychiatrist
explained to me that it takes
time to root out all the little
fears and worries thai have
been eating away at Ed all
his life. At the lime of his
collapse, he had just lost out
on a promotion in the history
department of tltc college
where he taught. This under
mined his confidence in him
self completely. II had been
shaky enough right along be
fore that.
Our friends and family, es
pecially George, rallied beau
tifully. We've made a good
start paying back our debts,
and we'll m::ke good to
George, too. He must trust
our doctor and be patient. The
doctor feels that Ed will make
a good comeback and be
stronger than ever. But he
won't set a time limit. And
he's busy enough not to have
to keep Ed coming an hour
more than necessary.

The Council: George raises
a question often worried about
by people who have been ad
vised to undergo psychoanaly
sis: When will it end? The
good word, and we have it
from leading psychoanalysts,
is that it ends al a clearly de
fined point, agreed upon by
both patient and doctor.
What point? The stage at
which he can tackle his prob
lems squarely, head on, with
out seeking refuge in anger,
hate and blame.
Unfortunately there are no
lab tests with which to check
progress. Jane and Ed are the
beneficiaries of an inexact
science, a behavioral one. as
opposed to an exact science
like mathematics or chemi
stry. While psychiatrists com
bine scientific skills with
ps chological techniques thai
approach a fine art. they still
cannot claim any magic key
lor unlocking all the dark
crypts within the human
heart. Ed. like other patients,
can give out or hold hack
whatever parts of himself he
chooses Thus he. nut the doc
tor. Jane nor Georue. deter
mines how long treatmenl
must continue

Right now Ed is function
ing, but not up to his full
capacity as a college profes
sor. He's out selling. The an
alyst's job is to help him re
move the blocks which keep
him from hitting at life on all
cylinders. The normal man,
we are told, has plenty of
problems but they don't get
him down. He doesn't let them
throw him too far off course.
He picks himself up and starts
over again. Ed couldn't pick
himself up. Now he can. What
remains is for the doctor tt
work with him to reverse th
destructive patterns which rt
main to hobble him.
Ed may well wind up on top
-if not on top of a sales force
or a college, at least on top of
