people, we can truthfully say
of animals: you will never
meet a single one that is
inherently bad; not a one but
what we should like.
If, in all the animal king
dom there could be an cn
ception to this, it would be
only a single species-the com
mon rat; this one really is a
gangster.
Leaving the rat out, ail
other animal species show a
marked measure of considera
tion and even respect for
others. Somewhat more than
can be expected of the human j
animal. j
They Don't Know
Animals never go around i
with a chip on their shoulder, j
as do so many people. There I
are some misinformed folks
who, in trying to say some
thing derogatory about some- j
one else, say, "he acts like
an animal."
Those folks who think or j
say this, just don't know i
what they are talking about.
If you want to say something
with more meaning you
should say, "he acts just like
a human."
Another favorite meaning
less expression is, "He's re
duced to the level of the
beast." This is supposed to be
violently degrading, but the
saying falls flat on its gram
matical face when applied to
animal actions. Just think
about it a minute; hav: you
ever been robbed, gypped,
cheated, insulted, mistreated
or even pushed around by a
so-called "lower beast?"
Of course you haven't.
There isn't an animal in the
world that would deliberately
take advantage of you or
anyone else.
One important reason we
so often belittle animals is
the profit angle. Many of us
have no use for anything or
any one who yields no mone
tary advantage. He who sells
ready-to-wear clothes can't
make a sale to the already
well-dressed bird. Rabbits
don't buy refrigerators.
'No Sale'
Aspirin tablets are of no
use to the wild creatures.
Squirrels will never wear a
wrist watch or a pair of ear
rings. Profitwise, all these
things register only a "no
sale" on the cash registar.
Look over carefully some
time the list of "morl wanted
criminals, those enemies still
at large"-who have so far
escaped the clutches of the
law. The list changes from
time to time, but you'll notice
it only lists people.
