Up To Four Hours
Wait Required To
Cross Columbia
Salem iUPD Deputy Stae
Highway Engineer G. S. Pax
son has confirmed that there
are waiting periods of up to
four hours to cross the Colunv
bia river at Astoria, but he
said delays of this length are
few in number.
Vehicle traffic on the three
state-owned ferries that op
erate between Astoria and
Megler, Wash., goes up sharp
ly in the summer because of
tourists, but Paxson said that
even then there are "very
few" waiting periods during
the week.
On summer week ends, he
said, the waiting period to
cross is usually 30 to 35
minutes.
Paxson said there are a
"few exceptions" on those
summer week ends when the
tide is right and clamming on
southwest Washington beaches
is good. On those few week
ends, he said, many Oregon
residents use the ferries, and
there have been jams with
waiting periods of several
hours.
On April 18 a group of offi
cials from the Oregon coast
called on Gov. Mark Hatfield
and complained that the fer
ry system is antiquated, citing
waits of up to four hours.
They want the Highway De
partment to buy another ferry
and improve the service, but
the department doesn't want
to because in 1965 the Astoria
Megler bridge will open, and
the ferries will be abandoned.
