The 1 European Common
Market, already a recognized
world force, ultimately may
increase its membership to in
elude 300 million people. As
such it would speak with a
voice equal to either the Uni
ted States or the Soviet
Union.
Joined with the United
States, it would present an
unconquerable wall to Com
munist ambitions for expan
sion, and the two then could
pour vast new sums into aid
for under-developed nations
which also are a Soviet tar
get. Largely because of this new
European economic union,
which includes lowering tar
iff barriers, the United States
is reviewing seriously its own
foreign trade structure, par
ticularly its tariffs. The Com
mon Market nations are West
Germany, France, Italy, The
Netherlands, Belgium and
Luxembourg.

nificant that Sheila who is 6,
and was not given the diet,

aged 4, who was put on the
diet shortly after she was
born, has a normal mentality.
As we doctors now know,
there is a simple ferric chlo
ride test which can be ap
plied to a wet diaper. If the
drug turns green, this means
that the child must immedi

cated test must be made.
Now that we know that
some mentally retraded chil
dren could have been saved,

to find a number of these
peculiar diseases in which the
infant's brain can be saved
from injury and he or she can
grow up to be normal. I must
emphasize . the fact that the
defect must be found shortly
after birth; it is useless to
look for it after the child's
brain has been badly injured.
Many people ask me what
can be done for itching of the
crotch, and some want to
know if it will lead tp cancer.
It rarely turns into cancer,
unless for sometime a white
area has appeared on the skin
- the so-called leukoplakia.
The treatment of the itch
ing is difficult and often un
satisfactory. If I had this
trouble, I would be inclined
to go for help to a good der
matologist (skin specialist).
One of my dermatologist
friends says he often gets
good results with the grenz
rays which I described in a
recent column. They are some
thing like x-rays, only much
weaker and quite safe. They
do not go through the skin,
and hence they do not go
down through into the tissues
under the skin. Often, they
have a good influence on the
skin. Calming ointments also
can relieve much of the itch
ing.
Because sometimes the itch
ing is due to leakage. I always
want the patient to be exam
ined by a proctologist (rectal
specialist) and in the case of
a w o m a n, a gynecologist
(woman's specialist). In bad
cases, I generally find that
the person is overly-sensitive
and a bunch of nerves, or I
find that he or she has a prob
lem that is not being solved
or well - handled. When the
problem is solved, the itching
stops.

Courses To Be Given

mentary school teachers dur
ing the summer session at the
University of Oregon. In addi
tion, a pre-summer workshop

elementary school rhythms is

ministrators of elementary

11 to 16, the course will
cover theory and content of
1 rhythmic materials for the
elementary school as related

education" and "elementary
