Maritime Talks
Called Fruitless
San Francisco-iUPU - Robert
Moore, deputy director of the
U. S. Mediation Service, plan
ned to return to Washington
today after what he described
as "wholly fruitless" talks
with parties in the West Coast
maritime dispute.
Moore met separately Tues
day with representatives of
Hie Pacific Maritime Associa
tion and three unions-sailors,
firemen, and cooks and stew
ards. He said there was "no
hope at all" for a negotiated
settlement of the dispute at
this lime.
The unions struck the ship
owners March 16 after failing
to agree on a three-year con
tract to replace one that ex
pired last October. The un
ions demanded about 17.8 per
cent increase in wages and
benefits, and the PMA offer
ed 11.8 per cent.
After a strike of 27 days.
President Kennedy invoked
the 80-day cooling-off period
of the Taft-Hartley Act. Ship
ping operations resumed, but
with little hope that the dis
put could be solved during
the injunction period.

Medical Society
Offers Services
Dr. Ralph E. Hibbs. presi
dent of the Jackson County
Medical society, announced
that members of the local so
ciety were donating their med
ical services to anyone injured
on the Bear Creek Beautifiea
tion project.
The action, taken by the
doctors at the monthly meet
ing, was an effort to make
their own contribution to a
worth-while project. They
wish to provide their own
medical services, free of
charge, for on-the-job injuries
to those workmen who were
also donating their labor.
The doctors felt this would
! stimulate the entire project by
encora.mng others to donate
equipment and services, it was
noted. It was hoped this would
eliminate some of the concern
regarding injuries sustained
on this community project.

Whey Now Useful In
Making of Mink Feed
Goldfield, Iowa - (UPU - A
Cheddar cheese processor re
moves protein from whey and
sells it to a nearby stock
feed company. The by-product
adds milk albumen to the diet
of young mink.
Whey is the watery sub
stance removed from milk
during the cheese making

til the cheese maker thought
of selling it to the makers of

Committee Probe
Of Infanie Unlikely
Milton - Freewatcr - IUPII - !
Slate Sen. Loyd Key said
Tuesday it appears his Losis
lative Interim Agriculture
Committee has no authority
to investigate the 1057 hiring i
of Mark M. Infante, former
controversial employee ot the
Oregon Labor Bureau.
State Sen. Carl Francis (Ft
Dayton) wrote Key Monday
urging an inquiry into the
hiring of Infante, including a
possible review of State Civil
Service Commission hiring
procedures.
Infante, who was a labor
bureau field man until 11)60,
raised the ire of numerous
farmers in a survey he helped
make on living conditions of
migrant workers.
Key, Miltnn - Frecwaler
Democrat, said he personally
would like lo look into the
matter but an attorney gen
eral's opinion says the interim
committee can't dig into any
thing not specifically author
ized by the lflUl legislature.
BIGGER, FEWER FARMS

in continuing. Largely as a re
sult of consolidations, the
number of farms declined bv
12X.000 last year to about 3.8
million, more than a lliird
less than in 1050.
