Possibility of Local College Discussed at Meet
Salem -HOT- An ' Informal

lay citizens from Marion and
Polk counties and northern
Linn county has decided to
set up a formal discussion
(roup to probe the possibility
of a community college.
Named as chairman of the
group was Paul Wilmeth, di
rector of vocational and tech
nical education for the Salem
school district.
The discussion committee
will be made up of an educa
tor and lay citiien from each
of the high school districts
In the two counties, and north
ern Una.
Wilmeth estimated that a
community college In the mid-
Willamette valley should have
an enrollment of 3,280 by
1972. He estimated necessary
buildings would cost about
$3.3 million,

questions about financing a
community college. He won
dered whether state funds for
a college would divert basic
school support funds to local

Two weeks ago the Oregon
education department estab
lished Marion, Polk and north
Linn counties as a central
Willamette valley area, for
purposes of planning a com
munity college by local officials.

of Mrs. Homer Bransom, route

his mother during leave from
the U. S. Army. Bransom is
stationed at Ft. Ord, Calif.,
and will be transferred to
Germany following his two
weeks of leave.

Retirement Series Speaker Listed For Final Session
Dr. Alvin Fellers, Ashland,
president of the Jackson
County Inter - Community
council, will speak at the
final session Tuesday, April
24, of the "Preparation for
Retirement" series in Med
ford. Dr. Fellers, who will speak
on "You as a community
member," has served on the
council for the past five years
and as its president this year.
The council devotes its time
to the study of the needs of
the people of the county.
He will review the various
sgencles and organisations in
the valley regarding their op
portunities for the retired per
sons both as a paid person
and as a volunteer worker.
Dr. Fellers is on the staff
at Southern Oregon college.
He has degrees from Adams
Stat college, Alamosa, Colo.:
Colorado State College of
Education, Greeley, and Stan
ford university.
The meeting will be held
at 7:30 p.m. at the conference
com of the Public Library
of Medford and Jackson coun
ty. Th series has been spon
sored by the social and eco
nomics issues committee of
the Medford branch, Ameri
can Association of University
Women, the Rogue Valley
Council on Aging and the
adult education department of
the Medford public schools.
The meetings are open to
th public.
