The Scars Remain
To the Editor: It is beyond
my capabilities to ever thor
oughly explain exactly why
all people have so much hat
red and deceit in their hearts,
for there is a price that at one
time must be paid, if only by
descendants.
Fifty years ago in our little
town a Fourth of July parade
was held, in which an armed
patriotic group marched as a
portion of the festivities. The
parade ended at the union
hall and an armed attack was
made in which many were in
jured and several hung by the
neck from a railroad bridge.
Many of the old brick build
ings still have bullet holes
in them and the incident is
still an explosive calm among
the descendants of both par
ties today in that town. So
the scars remain, as in all of
the world: Miriam was cursed
with leprosy because of color
prejudice.

Charlie's Record
To the Editor: For five
years I have been carrying on
a campaign of petitions and
letter-writing to require that
shoes be labeled. I am a shoe
repairman and I know that
many buyers don't get what
they need or what they pay
for. Now the Federal Trade
commission will soon estab
lish regulations for shoe-labeling.
It was a long, hard fight,
one I couldn't have won with
out the help of Charles O.
Porter, who was my Congress
man and who will be again, I
sincerely hope. I am glad to
serve as his campaign chair
man in Jackson county.
Congressman Porter kept
me informed throughout this
battle and made it possible
for me to work with others
who realized people needed to
know about the shoes they
bought. The shoe manufactur
ers lobbied against both
Charlie and myself.
I wish you could see the
pile of letters and books that
represents what my friend
and Congressman Charlie
Porter did for me and my cru
sade when he was in office.
It was Charlie's work in
Washington that set off the
longest and 'argest investiga
tion into the shoe industry in
history, and this led to the
regulations soon to be in ef
fect.
If you are happy over the
success of my fight for bring
ing you the means of buying
better shoes, please do not
forget, vote for Charlie Por
ter on May 18.
Two more points I would
like to make: one, all the
groundwork for the new post
office soon to come to Med
ford was. done by Charlie Por
ter when he was in Congress
and, two, Congressman Porter
was the man who revived the
$100 million Rogue Basin
project which can riean so
much for jobs and prosperity
in our area. These are just
three of the things that Char
lie Porter has done for this
area and the 4th district'.
A record like Charlie's is
better than a lot of promises

cramming the proceeds down
our throats, bring it to the
people, and let them decide
if they want to jeopardize the
freedom that they have.
Take away a man's guns,
you take away his will to
fight, and when we lose our
will to fight we will no long
er be a free America.

tin, to enlist the aid of Sen.
Mike Mansfield, Rep. Metcalf

that want to be fair to us, the
citizens.
Just give us a chance to
have our say, by a vote.

He's for Swede
To the Editor: In reply to
Charles Jackson's letter of the
18th where he so generously
took pot shots at K. C. Swede
Wernmark, one of the leading
Democratic candidates for
county judge in the coming
primary election, I have this
to say: "the tongue in cheek"
letter submitted to the letters
to the editor column shows an
obvious intent to discredit Mr
porting incidents and discu
sion, and by unfairly criticiz
ing a few small procedures
forgetting in their entirety the
issues involved in the present
campaign.
As chairman of this event
and also chairman of the
"Wernmark for County Judge
Committee," I wish to state
so that all may know that the
meeting was conducted in
proper order,
The kickoff meeting for
Swede Wernmark started at
6:15 to an invited group of
45 campaign workers especial
ly invited by the committee
to attend. At the conclusion
of this dinner, the meeting
was made public to hear the
first open discussion of why
the people of Jackson county
should vote down the pro
posed charter. This point the
verbose Mr. Jackson missed
altogether. He also missed the
point that about 65 people,
including some seven candi
dates, even Republicans, came
and spoke against the charter.
These in addition to the 45
dinner guests.
I am very sorry that one
person took It wrong about
asking for contributions from
the assembled campaign work-

may I say, a good one.
I do not believe that the
writer, Mr. Jackson, came to
the meeting to sincerely con
sider the issues involved but
came to deliberately seek
some small thing or things
to use in an eftort to try to
discredit a leading candidate
for county judge. I can see no
other reason.
Swede Wernmark has the
training, know-how, education
and judgment to administer
the affairs connected with
this position and I know that
he would give the county an
active, action filled, progres
sive program for its develop
ment and growth.
I wish to state further that
I am for the Swede all the
way, and that his efforts to
convince the voters of Jack
son county that the proposed
charter and Home Rule should
not be adopted meets with
entire approval.

worst offenders. The major
ity of the members of our com
munity who have taken the
time to explore the field of
communication with the edi
tor of this paper have attempt
ed to slander and often ac
cuse their fellow citizens of
lying, cheating, and many
other venial sins of sorts.
The case of many becomes
one of the pot calling the ket
tle black. In attempting to
"correct" their foes these same
contributors have used many
of the same techniques which
they themselves have so harsh
ly repudiated as being bad.
Referring to the Bible as his
text, the average Communica
tor has made his own argu
ment seemingly (in his own
mind, at least) invulnerable.
A reader of this column on
any average day could find
an assortment of sundry ar
guments raging, carried on
by such authorities as L. G.
Weaver, Alice I. Black, Wal
ter Reece, L. C. Powell, and
others all directed against the
Communists or any other
branded 'pink' organizations
in the United States. Unfor
tunately these people fail to
realize that they, having nev
er either experienced Com
munism or seen first hand its
affects, are standing on very
thin ground. They are actual
ly very limited in their knowl
edge of the broad field in
which they are attempting to
endeavor.
To a person who, on the oth
er hand, attempts to suggest
some concrete steps (i, e. the
U. N.) and further that we,
as Americans, should be intel
lectually armed to fight the
enemy, this same group re
lentlessly throws libelous cal
umnies and accuses him of
actually being one himself
(Communist). Although this
person has seen what similar
scare techniques can do to a
nation, the perfect Deity of
bigoted authorities continue
to drop back onto their never
ending witicisms and hand
slapping.
The Birch Society, the
D.A.R., and other such dog
matic organizations have con
tinually insisted that anyone
or any organization which at
tempts to solve the world
problems through bargaining,
rather than name calling, is
nothing less than a Commu
nist inspired organization it
self. Incidently, it might be
noted by all readers that the
United States Supreme Court,
the United States Congress,
the President of the United
States, and nearly every other
official of our government are
all disreputable, heathen, un.
speakably bad Communists.
(This is a weak attempt at sa
tire.) Needless to say, the "Bible
thumping" authorities who
daily grace this page should
examine their own methods
and see how closely they re
semble those who they claim
to be fighting. One word of
warning, however ........
watch out your neigh
bor might be a Communist spy
who Is out to get you.

World's Fair began its special
states' days today by honornig
Wisconsin.
The 13.000 men and officers
of Wisconsin's 32nd Division
stationed at nearby Ft. Lewis
were given the day off to help
whoop it up and swell attend
ance figures at the fair.
Wisconsin's Gov. Gaylord
A. Nelson was here to per
sonally greet the men of the
32nd and their families in a
special program at the fair's
plaza of the States.
The other 49 states will
have their day at the fair
later.

I live in California now, I
am writing to you in protest
to the general and complete
disarmament now being pro
posed by the U.S.
I think that anything as
big as a disarmament agree
ment should be brought to the
people, and they alone should
decide by vote.
After what happened by
U. H. police action in other
parti of the world, I for one
do not want to place my chan
ces for continued freedom
and welfare in the hands of
an organization that can be
stopped by just a Russian veto.
