John and Olca after going
together for a long time, be
came engaged. During this
period of courtship John gave
her a number of gifts. Includ
ed among these were a dress,
a pair of shoes, a handbag
and miscellaneous toiletries
and perfumes. On becoming
engaged, John gave her a dia
mond ring. Some of the gifts
were given prior to the ac
tual engagement and some fol
lowing it.
About two weeks later Ol
ga told John she was break
ing the engagement and would
not marry him. He requested
that she return the diamond
ring but she refused.
John brought a legal action
against her seeking to recover
the ring and the personal
items he had given her from
time to t i m e. Olga argued
that the state had a statute
outlawing a "breach of prom
ise suit" and that John's ac
tion was basically this type
of suit. John, on the other
hand, contended that the gifts 1

Applesauce Loaf Cake

Loaf Cake can come to the

led with cinnamon sugar and
broiled till bubbly for a
quick snack; spread with
cream cheese for a lunchtime
treat; topped with nutmeg
flavored whipped cream
softened ice cream for a deli
cious dessert. Better bake 2
of them while you're at it.
2 cups sifted enriched
flour
1 tablespoon baking
powder
',2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
Vi cup butter or other
shortening
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 cup canned applesauce
cup chopped nuts
Sift together flour, baking
powder, salt and cinnamon.
Cream together butter and
sugar until light and fluffy.
Add eggs, beating well. Blend
in applesauce.
Sift in flour mixture, stir
ring only enough to moisten
flour. Stir in nuts. Bake in
greased 5V4x9'2-inch (or oth
er of comparable size) loaf
pan in moderate, 350 degree,
oven one hour and 15 minutes
or until it tests done.
Milk, Meat and Eggs
Wash Out Fallout

Super Supper Salads
Main dish salads made with
chilled greens, diced cucum
ber, strips of green pepper,
ham or luncheon meats, chick
en, and cheddar cheese, then
tossed lightly with a French
dressing or dairy sour cream
spiked lightly with garlic,
are a joy to serve; a delight
to eat. Recipe is for six gen
erous servings.
1 head lettuce
1 unpeelcd young cucum

1 tablespoon catsup
Freshly ground black
pepper
2 hard-cooked eggs
2 tomatoes
Tear lettuce into large
chilled bowl. Add cucumber,
pepper, meat, chicken and
cheddar cheese. Crumble Blue
cheese into French dressing or
riairv sour cream spiked with
garlic. Stir in catsup. Pour
over sala.l. Sprinkle to taste

The trial court agreed with
Olga's contention, refused to
compel her to return the gifts
to John, and dismissed his ac
tion. John appealed to the Su
preme Court of New Hamp
shire. THE COURT HELD: John
was entitled to the return of
the engagement ring. Olga
was ordered to give it back to
him. Regarding the miscella
neous gifts of personal prop
erty the c o r t said these
"stand on a different foot
ing." The court said "they are
more nearly akin to a Christ
mas present." The engage
ment ring, however, was giv
en on the condition, which
could be expressed by the par
ties or implied by the court
that marriage would ensue.
To permit the defendant to
keep the ring would result in
an unjust enrichment to her
at the expense of the plain
tiff. The court pointed out
that "by the great weight of
authority recovery is allow
ed." The theory of decisions
like this is simply to prevent
"unjust enrichment." (Gikas
v. Nicholis, N.H. 1950, 71 A.
2d 785.)

they read this. For six serv
ings: Combine four table
spoons sugar, four table
spoons unsweetened cocoa
powder, one-half teaspoon
ground cinnamon and a dash
of ground nutmeg. Blend in
one-half cup water; boil one
minute. Gradually stir one
quart milk into the sugar
cocoa syrup. Heat thoroughly
but do not boil. Serve lopped
with swirl of whipped cream
or a marshmallow or two.
Turkey, Chickens, Ham

thing special whether it is a
family affair or planned for
family and friends.
Meat in the menu is likely
to be turkey, chicken or ham.
Turkeys come in all sizes,
both fresh and frozen, whole,
halved or quartered. Some
markets feature turkey legs
and breasts. The bigger the
turkey the better the buy.
There's several days' good
eating in a turkey.
Chickens

and serve. Ever the least ex
perienced cook can do no
wrong if she but reads and
follows cooking directions
and schedule that comes with
the packaged ham.
A lamb roast, leg or shoul
der, will be the choice of
some, and here we only re
mind you to give lamb plenty
of cooking time.
Vegetable bins offer arti
chokes, asparagus, broccoli,
cabbage, carrots, cauliflower
lettuce, onions, radishes, eel
cry, green peppers, zucchini
squash and green onions.
Fruit displays suggest ba
nanas, grapefruit, oranges,
lemons, rhubarb, pineapples,
papayas and avocados.

weapons.
In a book titled "Why Not
Victory?" Goldwater said this
nation should announce "in no
uncertain terms that we are
agninst disarmament."
Published by McGraw Hill
today, the book spells out
Goldwater's conception of a
new American foreign policy.
In the war against commu
nism, Goldwater said the na
tion needs weapons for both a
limited and an unlimited war.
He summed up his point
this way: "Strategically our
program must be directed to
ward the removal of Commu
nists from power, whether
they hold it 90 miles off our
i southern coast or in distant
Laos and Vict Nam."
