Mrs. G. O. Gillaspey, 3839 Military road, brought this
unusual stalk of fritillaria, commonly known in Jackson
county as red bells, to the Mail Tribune office one day last
week. The stalk has 17 blossoms; the usual red bell stalk is
much smaller with only six to eight flowers. The flower was
picked in the Applegate area by Mr. Gillaspey, who reported
that he was careful to leave more than a foot of stem in
order that the bulb would not be killed. (Landia photo)

months in the United States.

High school and lives with

of Central Point.
The American Field service,
a private organization that
plans and screens the appli
cants, requires a preliminary
essay outlining the student's
attitude toward the proposed
year's study in an American
school. This is followed by a
personal interview and a visit
from a previous exchange stu
dent. According to Miss Moser,
there are many similarities
between Oregon and her
homeland. The mountains, the
forests, and the lakes of Ore
gon make her feel at home.
Like Oregon, Austria has not
only its mountain area with
lakes and forests but also its
eastern plains. Although Aus
tria is only one-third as large
as Oregon, it has more than
three times as many people.
Like most exchange stu
denls, the speaker said she
is impressed by the friendli
ness of the people. Coming
from a city in which she knew
only her relatives and a very
few close friends, she is sur
prised and pleased with the
general goodwill between

Sigma Phi at a meeting April
11 at the home of Mrs. David
Taylor, Talent. She will be
presented on Founder's day at
an event April 30 at Kim's
restaurant.

Omega chapter of the Epsilon
