CORNER JACKSONVILLE HI WAY AND LOZIER LANE
REWARD-Clementina O'Day,
7-months-old, sot this black
eye in her efforts to obtain
a piece of birthday cake. She
was helping her grandpar
ents, Mr. and Mrs. George
O'Day, observe their joint
birthdays when they showed
her the cake. She reached for
it and her grandfather pulled
it from her grasp. To show
her displeasure, she banged
her face on the tray of her
high-chair, resulting in the
shiner. She got a piece ot
cake. (UPl)

Pace lor Frozen
Food Industry
Washington-HIPP -The "hot
test" thing in cold storage is
frozen vegetables, according
to the Agriculture depart
ment. .
Frozen vegetables, the de
partment said, have set the
pace for the booming frozen
foods industry, and they oc
cupy an increasing share of
the rapidly growing freezer
space.
In 1941, the average Amer
ican ate only seven-tenths of
a pound of frozen vegetables.
By 1961, this had multiplied
to about 11 pounds per per
son. The vegetable freezing
industry boosted its produc
tion during th': same time
from 106 million to 2.2 billion
pounds.
In 1941, the nation's freez
er storage rooms held an aver
lage of 74 million rjounds of
I frozen vegetables on the first
jdnv o( ench month. In 19B1,
Ithe monthly vegetable stocks
averaged more than a billion
I pounds, about 31 per cent of
Ithe total weight of lrozen
Ifopd In storage.
I The department's April
cold storage report showed '
that holdings of frozen vege
tables slipped below the "bi 1 -liion
pound mark for the first
time since Aug. I, 1981. A 83-
fmiJIiin nnunl H,Hnn Fact
month lowered holdings to
075 million pounds.
During 1081, total holdings
of frozen vegetables reached
an' all time high of 1.3 bil
lion pounds. New storage rec
ords were set tor frozen lima
beans, green beans, broccoli,
carrots, cauliflower, corn.
peas, rpinach and french fried
potatoes.
The year also produced the
high mark for stocks of sev
eral other items: 999 million
pounds of frozen fruits, in-
luding record stock of blue
berries and cherries; 550 mil-
on pounds of frozen poultry.
which a record 382 million
pounds were turkeys; and SO
1 1 lion gallons of frozen
orange concentrate.
These and other food inven
tories in both cooler and freez
er rooms on Nov. 1 made up
largest product weight
ever stored under refrigera-
n at ont time-almost 8 bil-
ion pounds.
During most of 1961, hold-
ngs were at new high levels
for the date, averaging 5.5
billion pounds per month.
This average dropped on
April 1 this year to a record
5.2 billion pounds for the
date.
