And Why Goui?
People keep begging me to
tell them what is uric acid;
why it causes gout; and how
one can keep
away from the
stuff. Uric
acid is one of
the chemicals
which forms
in the body
during the di
gestion of the
proteins such
as are found
Aivam 'n meats,
chicken, fish and eggs.
Large amounts of the spe
cial chemicals from which
uric acid is made are to be
found in liver, kidneys, and
sweetbreads. But leaving
these foods out of the diet will
not always solve the patient's
problem or give relief be
cause much of the uric acid
in the body is not taken in
with the food; it is made in
the body.
It is the same with choles
terol; it is useless to try to go
on a cohlesterol-free diet be
cause large amounts of the
substance can be made in the
body.
The big trouble with many
gouty people is that they in
herited a tendency to the
disease. Their body lacks
enough of a "ferment" which,
in normal persons, serves to
split the uric acid into simpler
and smaller chemicals which
then can be excreted (thrown
out of the body) by the kid
neys. There are a number of
chronic or life-long diseases
which, years ago, were well
named by Dr. Garrod of England-Unborn
Errors of Meta
bolism (body chemistry)." He
wrote a famous book on these
diseases, and now new ones
constantly are being found.
Ftw Drugs Help
Fortunately, we have a few
drugs which help in cases of
gout. The old colchicine is
still good to abort an acute at
tack. Butazolidine can relieve
much of the pain, and Bene
mid can help the body to get
rid of the uric acid.

declared by Oregan State
Scholarship Commission
Chairman E. B. Lemon.
Two-thirds of the appli
cants have had to be turned
down this year, Lemon said.
Me said 4,800 needy and qual
ified high school students ap
plied, while the commission
had only 1,450 scholarships to
award.
Lemon appealed to organi
zations and private citizens to
give help "where it is most
needed - to the young and
able citizens of this state.
Me said many qualified stu
dents, representing the top
quarter of their class, are
forced to abandon college edu
cation without scholarship

It helps much to stay thin,
and in some cases, it helps
much to leave liquor alone.
When I was young, doctors
used to speak of the "rich
man's gout," thought to be
brought on by drinking cham
pagne, and the "poor man's
gout," thought to be due to
drinking beer. My good
friend, Dr. John Talbott,
(Editor of the Journal of the
AMA) has written an excel
lent book on gout (Grune and
Stratton). I do not know how
much a layman who is not a
chemist could get out of read'
ing it, but Dr. Talbott's Eng
lish is very readable. People
certainly will be much inter
ested in his fascinating chap
ter on the heredity of the
disease.
Thinks of Arthritis
The big trouble with gout
is that, so commonly, the
American physician does not
think of it, and hence when
he sees a man with one very
painful joint, he thinks only
of arthritis and fails to note
that the poor fellow has gout.
Examination of the blood
usually shows a larger than
normal amount of uric acid
X-ray studies may show de
fects in the bones, typical of
gout, and examination of the
lobes of the ears may show
little white nodules (tophi)
made of uric acid.
As I said recently, anyone
who occasionally wakes at 2
a.m., with an excruciating
pain In one big toe joint has
gout. After a week or two,
the "storm" tends to calm
down.

among the most valuable pos
sessions we have, and at the
first sign of faulty or irregular
vision we should see the doc
tor. Dr. Alvarez' booklet,
